Advantages: easy to use, simple but reliable functions, quick and accurate reponse to movement

Disadvantages: looks a bit tatty after extensive use, scroller wheel could be improved

I use computers on a daily basis and have a nice neat Dell desktop package in my office at work. This mouse came with my computer package, but you can buy them separately from most electrical outlet stores.

Looks wise the Dell USB mouse is nothing special. It has the standard curved shape and fits nicely into the underside of my hand. It's made from plastic components and the main section is black, along with silver coloured buttons at the top. It plugs into the computer by means of a USB connection, and has a generously long cable that allows you to position the mouse in a suitable location. This is good for me as I like to have the mouse quite close to me, but the USB port is right round at the back of my computer and it needs a good long cable to reach around. For those with smaller desk set ups the long cable could get in the way, but it's nothing a cable tidy wouldn't sort out.

I am glued to my computer throughout the day and spend a lot of time using this mouse. It fits nicely into my hand and the curved shape gives me something to grip onto. The tracker wheel is located in the centre of the two click buttons, and because they're all so close together it's very easy to flick between clicking and scrolling.

I've had this mouse for several years now and it has performed consistently well. Visually it is in mostly good condition, other than two patches on the right and left buttons where the silver finish has worn away and the white base colour is showing through.

This mouse has an infra-red sensor underneath which allows you to track your movements quickly and accurately. It works well on most flat surfaces without requiring a mouse mat, and most of my colleagues with the same item use this directly on the surface of their work desk. I prefer to use mine with a cushioned mouse mat as I need the extra wrist support, and the mouse works just as well on the small area of mat without sticking or jumping.

Over the years that I have been using this mouse it has worked well and I have never had any major problems with it at all. It seems to accurately track my movements, although there are rare occasions where I will 'lose' the cursor and then have to wiggle the mouse around until it comes back again. For basic functions such as pointing and clicking it works exceedingly well and as it is so simple it would be suitable for most computer users.

The only issue that I have with this mouse is that the tracker wheel sometimes lets me down. I have to scan read through a lot of PDF documents and the wheel seems to vary the speed at which it scrolls. Sometimes I will nudge it a tiny bit and it jumps down several pages, and other times it will appear not to have registered and then suddenly catch up with itself and then takes me too far. With the centred position of the tracker wheel it can become a little uncomfortable if you use it for prolonged periods of time. I do occasionally get a stiff or numb feeling in my index finger from using this function, but it is the most logical place for the wheel to be located, and moderating use reduces the level of strain.

This is a good basic mouse that accomplishes everything I need it to do throughout my working day, and I have no need to look at replacing or upgrading it even after several years. I would recommend for anyone who wants a reliable and hard wearing mouse that is easy to use and has a 'no frills' sort of look.
