Advantages: Comfortable, Reliable, FREE!

Disadvantages: PS/2 connection no good for older computers

Mice are strange beasts really - not only the squeaking cheese eating variety - but also the plasticy clicking and pointing variety.

I'm always amazed how the cheaper mice often turn out to be the better ones. There are expensive mice that are worth paying a premium for (such as the Microsoft Intellimouse Explorer) but in general, a cheap mouse will often perform better and last longer than a more expensive one.

Which brings me on nicely to the Memorex A3P450A.

I've used quite a few different mice in my time, but this really is one of the most attractive and comfortable beasties that I've ever come across.

The A3P450A comes in an attractive translucent plastic casing - allowing you to just about see the innards of the device - which has a tint of purple in it, and makes a refreshing change from the usual boring grey offerings.

The 'tail' (I.E. the connecting cable) is also nicely styled, taking on the appearance of a fibre-optic cable with little silver flecks in it. The cable is also remarkably long - about 1.5 metres.

The mouse is well sculpted, from the large, rounded buttons at the front it slopes upwards towards the palm and then swoops back down perfectly at the back to accommodate the base of the hand.

The device features a PS/2 connection, two main function buttons (which is all you really need for Windows) and a small, rounded button in the middle that the two main buttons are curved around.

The small button is used for Internet scrolling. When the correct drivers are installed and it is held down, you may scroll documents up and down within the browser by moving the mouse backward and forward - so you don't need to move over to the scroll bars all the time.

Drivers are included for both DOS and Windows.

I've been using one of these mice for about 6 months now and it is still performing extremely well. The tracking is smooth, accurate, and
consistent, and the trackball stays very clean - reducing the risk of the mechanism becoming clogged.

It is comfortable, functional, and reliable. What more could you really ask for?

Oh, and the best thing is that it doesn't cost a penny!

If you buy a box of ten Memorex 700MB CDRs (The quality of which really is very high - I'll review these once they are added to Dooyoo but at the moment the new suggestion function still doesn't seem to be working!!!) then you will get one of these mice included in the box for free.

Otherwise they cost around £5.99 to buy (RRP).

The A3P450A is a mouse that is well worth having even if you only use it as a spare.

If you're not fussed about the cases, then http://www.jungle.com/ are doing a great deal on Jungle Branded (memorex made) blank 700 meg cd's, 100 for £25 - it's on their front page! (I'm a firm believer in Memorex media - it's never failed me!)

Congratulat ions on writing so much on a mouse...VU for you!
