Microsoft Trackball Optical ... advantage of Trackball Optical!

Microsoft brings the superior precision and durability technology of IntelliEye to trackballs and offers the Trackball Optical that features a comfortable ball located on the side for thumb use.

The trackball utilizes USB connections to offer instant plug-and-play action. In addition, it is the first trackball to offer five customizable buttons, including the popular scrolling wheel. Each button can be programmed for common tasks such as moving forward or backward in a Web browser or cutting, pasting and printing in Windows operating system-based programs.

The only real downside is it has a tendancy to clog up slightly; I find I need to take the ball out and clean it and the inside once or twice an hour. And obviously it's completely the wrong shape for the left handed.. I picked this up for all of £25 4 years ago and it continues to do the job. If you don't like touchpads/laptop nipples and you either dislike or don't have the space for mice, then I can't recommend this enough....more

This is a really nice bit of kit. The trackball features a scroll wheel, which is very useful and quickly becomes second nature, and 'back'/'forward' buttons. Too the Ney sayers of the MS optical track ball, I say, What, the Logitech track ball better, WHAT, what rock are you under, now granted that the current asking price of over $100 us ( because its out of production ) is a bit steep, and because I have my supply of them that I procurred when the price of 24.99 was soo reasonable. I've even concidered selling a couple, then thought better of it. Logitechs trackballs in no way compare, they either have a model with No scroll wheel ( useless) or there models with a scroll wheel and only 2 buttons, no back or page forward buttons, anyone that thinks they compare in any way, Just has Never used the ...  Read the complete review

Crowned Review Microsoft Trackball Optical: Still way to grow in shrinking... (937 words)

In my review on Logitech Trackman I gave all reasons why trackballs in general are so good, so I`ll add just one more to that: - they are still not much in demand, so shops that have a few lying in stock for years are keen to get rid of them and You can come across real bargains. That is how I bought a new Microsoft Trackball Optical for just under 14 EUR. It went as a gift, but I gave it a test drive out of curiosity. Here it will be compared to my Logitech Trackman which is the benchmark in the category, while Microsoft is just starting out with trackballs. Trackball Optical comes in a box with a PS/2 adapter for its standard USB ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Not as nice as the old IntelliMouse (609 words)
by - written on 05/11/01 (Very useful, 194 readings)
Rating:

I recently built a new computer and so my wife decided she'd like to use my old one. She loved the old IntelliMouse trackbal that was attached to it so I decided to get a new one so we could have one each. When I went down to Dixons, it turned out they didn't stock it anymore. All they had was this new Optical Trackball so I thought I'd get that as new probably meant better! The Optical Trackball boasts a few extra features than the good old IntelliMouse... 1) No moving parts! The IntelliMouse was just like a normal mouse with wheels and stuff but this Optical Trackball is quite different. If you pop the ball out of it's socket you can see a ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Microsoft Trackball Optical: The great looking Microsoft Optical TrackBall (202 words)
by - written on 19/07/01 (Useful, 164 readings)
Rating:

Most people either love or hate the thought of using a trackball. The TrackBall Optical uses an optical sensor instead of moving parts like a ball. Therefore there is no fluff or dirt to remove or fiddly wheels to clean. Like Microsoft's Intellimouse Explorer, this trackball boasts no fewer than 5 fully customisable buttons, including the scrowllwheel. If you are a traditional one-button mouse user you may hate this thought, but it does have its advantages. For example, you could have one button for a single click whilst reserving the other buttons for doing clever things like scrolling and to move you forward or backwards in a Web browser or configure the ...  Read the complete review
