~~Introducing Mini Mouse...
This usb mouse is perfect for my needs, as I have a netbook that I love which has a touchpad I really don't get along with - a mouse is a necessity for me. This Targus mini mouse is perfect when I'm out and about, because it's so small yet fully functional!
The 'mini' aspect to this mouse couldn't be more evident - just 75x35x23mm (approx) and weighing a tiny 42g. It's built from lightweight plastic with a thin and lightweight cable. It's not the kind of thing you would shout about because of the ease with which it will *fit* in your handbag or pocket, rather that it's in danger of getting *lost* in there!
The thin cable is fully retractable by virtue of a tiny spring-loaded spool which coils the cable fully away when not in use. The spool is enclosed in a small plastic disc-shaped cover, which is open around its edges, handy if any cable tangles should occur.
To open the cable to your desired length, the cable is pulled from both directions, by pulling the usb plug and the mouse in opposite directions until it clicks locked. A gentle tug again will enable you to extend, and to retract the cable, simply pull the cable in both directions to the maximum and gently release.
The mouse is made from tough, high gloss finished plastic, nicely rounded in shape. It has two click buttons at the front and a scroll wheel in between. When the cable is fully retracted, the usb plug is specially shaped with a recess into which the cable spool snuggles for a completely tidy and compact overall look. When fully extended, the length of the cable is approximately 60cm, which is more than enough to work with on most laptops/netbooks even if your usb port is on the opposite side to your preferred mouse side.
The mouse is connected by usb to any port, and is 'plug and play' so no software is required. All the devices I've used this mouse with have installed and used it immediately with no issues. The response of the mouse to movement is easily on a par with other mice that I use.
I think the only issue anyone could have with this mouse is that it would simply be TOO small. The mouse is really operated in and by the fingers rather than the palm of the hand, and for people with larger fingers this could be quite fiddly. The click buttons and scrolling wheel are all nicely responsive without being temperamental. For me, with quite smallish hands, I have absolutely no issues using the mouse at all, in fact I find it works brilliantly and is satisfylingly usable and reliable.
Other than the possibility of underestimating just how small this mouse is, the only other negative I've come across is a very few occasions where the cable hasn't retracted tidily first time. Each time this has happened it has been rectified by extending and retracting the cable again, so it's never been a major issue, but needs mentioning.
Everything about this mouse is perfect for my on-the-move needs. It's small, lightweight, yet offering all the functions of my other midi and full sized usb mice. I recommend it 100% and can't bring myself to deduct a star for its rare cable-tangles.
I've had this little mouse for ages now, and I don't know what I'd do without it. I use it with my laptop, because I find that using the touch pad is clumsy, and the mouse is a perfect replacement.
When you plug it into the USB port, it takes just a few seconds to start working. It's easy to use. Occasionally the bottom gets clogged with dust, which causes the cursor on screen to get 'stuck' slightly. This can be annoying, but its not difficult to just pull whatever is obstructing it out, and this always solves the problem quickly.
I think the size of it is a huge bonus, as I often have a messy desk. It takes up very little room, and the size isn't a problem for me when clicking even though I have massive hands!
The retractable cord doesn't cause any problems once you've worked out how to use it (took me a little while, I have to admit!) although I can't really pull out any huge advantages for having it there. Maybe if you placed your laptop a long way away...? I guess having the word 'retractable' in the product name just sounds a little more impressive!
