      Reasonably fun novelty gadget

Now here's a blast from the past... the 'Mini Mic Recorder' - this small gadget allows you to record and playback a ten second voice clip. I remember being given one of these around fifteen years ago and thinking it was quite a cool novelty item. Nowadays I'm not so impressed with the product - don't get me wrong, it's still entertaining in its own right, it's just that gadgets have seriously advanced in terms of their technology in recent years leaving this one looking a little dated.

      Design and Specification
      - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
Shaped (as you can probably guess) like a tiny microphone, the Mini Mic measures around five centimetres in length and comes with a keyring loop to allow you to attach the device to your keys. Made from silver plastic, the microphone is for fun use only - this isn't a serious piece of recording equipment as the sound quality is generally poor. The build quality is similarly flimsy - that said, it's not something which needs to be especially robust.

      Cost & Availability
      - - - - - - - - - - -
Price-wise, the mini-mic is actually quite difficult to get hold of these days - that said, I saw some selling on eBay a few days ago (new) for £3.99. The product requires a couple of button cell batteries (included) which with fairly frequent use will need to be changed in around two to three weeks. Rather than just stopping when the battery runs out, the playback on the Mini Mic becomes slower and deeper, often with entertaining effect.

      Recording & Final Word
      - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
The microphone's side features two buttons; a red one and a black one. To record your voice clip, simply press the red one - to play it back, press the black one. Only one clip can be stored at a time, as a subsequent press of the red button records over your previous work. Even though the device is simple in its purpose, it's still a fun little gadget - children seem to find recording their own voices entertaining, and (unfortunately) endlessly repeatable. Overall, the Mini Mic recorder is a cheaply made yet fun little device which is more suited to kids than adults.
