Advantages: Solid, compact and cheap considering it's quality and status
Disadvantages: It really hurts when you get hit by one.
Everybodies doing it, doing it, doing it, everybodies doing it picking it up and using it...lol. Well how can you review a Microphone without singing a song. Anyway, the Shure SM58 has been around forever it seems and you are as likely to see one on the mainstage at T in the park as you are in the pub Karaoke. Yes it seems that shamateurs and professionals alike are all using SM58's. These little gems are industry standards. There are now a variety of different specked up models but essentially it is the quality and reliability of these mics that puts them first among equals.
Now usually when products have mass appeal it aint always for good reasons. Think junk food, think Big Brother, The SUN newspaper. Popular things like these appeal to the lowest common denominator...the amoeba's closest relatives; you with me. Well not so the Shure SM58.
Whoever was responsible for bringing that to market definitely deserved the 'employee of the month; award. Professionals use them because they sound fabulous and are virtually indestructable. Semi-pros love them cos they sound great and only have to be replaced when some snide steals them when your not looking. Karaoke singers love them cos they think they look and sound professional standing behind one.
So everyones a winner and you cannot go wrong with a Shure SM58. They are bulletproof solid and unbeatable for the accurate sonic reproduction of your vocals. You only get what you give tho so bad vocals will still be bad.
Summary: Regarded as the best you can buy for the money.
