      Amateur Mics

I have been using Sennheiser wireless mics for years. I know they are 400% more expensive than the Sonys, but boy do you get what you pay for.

These Sony Bluetooth wireless mics deliver a very low level into a professional video camera and when you crank up the gain on the mics and receivers the sound is distorted and has very little depth. It actually sounds rather tinny, which is not to say lacking in bass, just tinny. There's no depth to the sound like you get on a proper wireless mic.

If you use these Sony mics with nothing to compare against then they do seem okay, but when you have shot footage with these and then a Sennheiser, the difference is like chalk and cheese. The Sonys just don't have anywhere near the dynamic range, thus the sound is not realistic.

I spent hours in post production trying to tidy up the sound I recorded (an interview), but the Sony mic fundamentally doesn't capture all the frequencies and so you can't put back in what is missing in the first place.

Because the mic is built into the body (not on a flying lead) they pick up the slightest movement if a person is wearing them on a lapel. Why Sony didn't put a 3.5mm jack to plug an external tie-clip mic in at this price is beyond me.

These are definitely amateur mics and not to be used in any kind of professional or even semi-professional production. I bought two and won't be using them again.

I ordered this mic/receiver for my kodak zi8 (note: the customer service people at Kodak told me the zi8 is not capable of using a wireless mic. They were wrong). I've been playing around with it for the last few weeks. It is REALLY nice. Although the mic is much bigger than a traditional wireless lapel mic, it's no big deal to me. Not to mention this thing is pretty sensitive. You can wear it on your pant pocket or some other "hidden" spot and it still picks up your voice no problem. I cannot comment on the battery life since I have not used it for an extended period of time. The distance is AMAZING. I have easily exceeded the 150ft max range and had no problems. At times the communication between receiver and mic is lost from a further distance if the line-of-sight is lost but if you find the line-of-sight it usually picks it up right away. In close range, 50 feet, I've never lost communication. This goes through walls no problem. I highly recommend this product. I've used other more expensive wireless mic systems in the past and this one is every bit as good for what I need (shooting conversations from a distance of about 10-50ft). Nice product. I would have given it 5 stars but I haven't determined the battery life. Comes with everything you need to set up but depending on your application and/or camera, you may need to spend a few extra bucks on adapters. I spent about $10 bucks to set this system up with my zi8 so I can use it per my needs. I like this product!
