I write this as a professional microbiologist. This microscope is excellent but, at first, it seems impossible to use at high power [400x] because of inadequate instructions. I recommend practising on a simple flat object like a small piece of printed paper. Press the microscope firmly down onto it [or put the object into the lens cap] and focus at 20x. Now use the focus wheel to change to high power by rotating anticlockwise as far as it will go from that 20x position and then very slowly moving back until focus is achieved. [Note that it looks as if it should be possible to rotate a short distance from the 20 mark to the 400 mark on the focussing wheel. This is not the case. It is necessary to turn the wheel in the opposite direction to the 400 mark.]
As others have commented it is difficult to focus at 400x because the depth of field is small, the contrast is low and it is difficult to hold everything steady. This is not a fault of this microscope; it is true for the best professional instruments which overcome the problem by being very heavy, having precision engineered platforms for moving the object and special lighting systems (e.g. phase contrast). With the VMS-400 I recommend practicing focussing on a simple object as described above; it also may help to fix it to a heavy base or to place the object in the transparent lens cap. For smaller objects it is helpful to press them between glass slides for viewing at high power.

In the box you get the microscope with the attached USB cable, a metal monopod stand, instruction manual as well as the driver CD.
The body of the microscope is covered in a high quality smooth rubber which gives a good grip when operating the microscope by hand. On the rear is a snapshot button which allows you to take a picture. I have noticed that when you press this button it causes the microscope to shake causing a blurry image. The recommended method of taking photos is to capture it using the software when the microscope is ositioned on the stand. Also on the microscope body is an adjustable wheel allowing you to adjust the brightness of the 8 illumination LEDs which are located on the front circled around the lense. There is also a silver focus wheel on the front allowing you to achieve the sharpest results. Underneath the microscope are 2=two slots which allow you to connect the microscope to the stand. The stand includes free movement so you can easily position the microscope to what is required. the 1.3 megapixel image sensor allows you to take pictures at a resolution of up to 1600 by 1200 and video up to an impressive 1280 by 960 resolution. Images can be saved as jpeg and videos can be recorded in an uncompressed avi format. Installing the drivers is quick and easy just insert the disk and follow the steps.
In a nut shell this microscope has everything you'd need and want from a USB microscope. The video quality is excellent, it looks great and most improtantly it works flawlessly.
When it works its bloody good but I keep getting a message the device can't be reconised or drivers not found. Pulling my hair out, but I I unstall everything and re install it it seams to go and it s good fun otherwise. Seem to be a few people having similar problems - wounder if there is updated drivers on there way, nothing yet, would have to think twice about recommending it at this stage because of tech problems - yeah but when it works . . .
