My kitchen was installed 6 months ago and I took advantage of starting from scratch to have some appliances built in, the microwave was one appliance I wanted to be built in because we have ample cupboard space but I wanted to create extra space on the work surfaces because I do a lot of cooking and even small microwaves take up a lot of room.
It is a standard microwave with no grill function, the wattage of the microwave is 900w and it has an internal capacity of 26 litres and that is plenty of room to ensure the microwave meets my requirements. There are 5 levels of power that are easy to find and scroll through so you can select the option that is best for what you are cooking, there are also 8 programmes you can use to set the microwave to defrost or cook dependent on the weight of your food. That is sometimes useful but I like to set the cooking time myself so I know it is accurate and I am not relying on the microwave to do too much of the preparation for me.
The auto defrost function is not accurate enough so I use that only very rarely. The majority of food I need to defrost in the microwave are portions of meat and the varying thickness make it hard to do using the auto defrost because you are told to turn or shield the food at times decided on by the microwave and that isn't precise enough to prevent some thinner cuts beginning to cook during the defrost. That may happen with all microwaves but it can be prevents by manually defrosting the food instead of selecting to auto defrost it.
The same goes for the auto cook programmes but because they are done by weight it is simple to move the food around at times to ensure the heat is spread evenly and it all cooks to the same degree. I don't cook meat in the microwave but reheat spaghetti bolognese and meat dishes after they have been cooked in the conventional oven, meat reheats better in the microwave than vegetable based dishes but perversely vegetables cook from frozen or fresh to perfection and it is a rare event now that I use the hob for any vegetable.
The microwave gets dirty inside because it's used so regularly and because microwave cooking causes more and looser splatters than other methods. I use an old fashioned fresh lemon method to clean it and that is all that is required as long as it is done on a regular basis.
The microwave height is 460mm and the width is 592mm so remember these measurements when designing your kitchen. The best price I have found it for is £299 in Currys.
