Tesco Microwave 700w
Member Name: technoir
Advantages: Cheap, cooks food, looks ok
Disadvantages: Little bit noisy, not very big capacity.
I bought this microwave from Tesco as I was in desperate need after blowing my previous one up. I didn't have much money, and wanted something quick, so really just went for the cheapest I could find that looked decent. Before buying, I was not really bothered about features or power levels, and it was really a blind buy.
For less than Forty pounds, it's quite a decent little cooker. 700 watts seems like a reasonable power, my last microwave being 800, I don't really notice the difference.
It's a basic white microwave, with a glass turntable, glass panelled door and touch pad controls. Clear instructions are included that do have quite a lot of information for cooking and trouble shooting, but as it's a microwave that I just use for heating, the instructions are not overly important to me.
There is a dial to change the power settings, and the cook time and start stop functions are controlled with the touch pad, which has a digital display and countdown timer.
You can cook on several different power settings, even down to ten per cent, but I can't understand why you would want to microwave something at such low power. If I were to be slow cooking, I would not be using a microwave oven. This function is a little bit pointless as I use a microwave to zap food until it's hot, not really 'cook' using it.
There is a lock function on the microwave to stop children from using it, but as I have my microwave on a kitchen worktop and not on the floor in a playroom, I have never used the child lock function.
Cooking is easy, I just pop in my microwave curry, press the time button for three minutes and then press start. There are lots of different functions, such as time delay cooking and auto start cooking, but I have never used these beyond checking them out when originally setting the microwave up. I am still a bit dubious about microwave cooking and would prefer to use an oven for things such as timed cooking and slow cooking. It has an interior light which allows me to see how the food is doing.
I have used the defrost function, but I always find that when defrosting a large piece of meat, the meat tends to get slightly cooked on the outside. It could be that I have not perfected the art of microwave defrosting, but I can never seem to get it right with this oven. I never seemed to have that problem with my previous one.
I can fit a dinner plate in, but I do find that the capacity is a bit small. When I put something larger in, such as a big microwave meal pot, or a large joint to defrost, I sometimes find it being too large to turn fully, getting caught on the sides and the plate spinning beneath it without actually turning the food. It has a 17 litre capacity, but this does not mean too much to me as I don't normally eat my food by the litre. It could have done with being a little bit bigger internally, but I suppose you get what you pay for.
The microwave is a little noisy; the fan seems to be the loudest bit, followed by the sound of the plate dinking on the runner as it goes round. It's not super loud, but it does not seem to have as much sound proofing as my previous microwave which was a Siemens. It could be that the construction of this unit is not as solid.
It does the job for the money, but if you are an appliance connoisseur or are intending to put this into a stylish kitchen then I would look elsewhere. If you just want to heat up food, then buy one. It would be good for a student or someone away from home needing a cheap cooker.
Summary: If you need a quick, inexpensive microwave, this will do the trick.
