Advantages: Open, honest approach to commerce with low prices

Disadvantages: Assumes some (though not massive) IT knowledge

Morgan sell a range of end-of-line, open-box and refurbished computers, cameras and computer peripherals. It is a well-established business with physical showrooms in London, Manchester and Birmingham, a traditional mail-order business and an e-commerce internet arm.

I have visited the shops in London and Manchester. Luxurious they are not, but they are piled high (literally) with goods and are well staffed with helpful and knowledgeable people, who do not indulge in pressure selling and are happy to let shoppers look and feel before buying.

Most of my Morgan experience, though, has been through telesales and internet sales. The website is clear, with postage and packing prices displayed early in the process of buying. In addition, Morgan publish a sales leaflet, the Morgan Flyer. This is available for download as a pdf from the website; they used to post it out as well, in the months following a purchase, but I have not received one for a while and do not know if they still do this. Just as in the shops, the telephone and email communications are excellent and they are happy to clarify any questions before you buy. Similarly, after-sales service has been good in my experience with a quick swap-out of items that have turned out to be defective.

The website goes into quite a lot of detail about the history of the company, its current operation, the names of its various managers, its terms and conditions. The whole thing is a model of transparency.

All goods are clearly marked for what they are, and all have clearly stated warranties; the end-of-line goods are brand new and have a full manufacturer's warranty while the other goods have some kind of reduced warranty.

If you are content to have last year's model of a piece of kit, the savings can be considerable, but you do have to be careful. For example, computers can be base units with no screen, or come without an operating system. This is no scam, as Morgan are always totally clear about what you get, but buyers used to getting complete off-the-shelf solutions might be caught out through making assumptions based on previous shopping experiences from other suppliers. Delivery has never failed to be very quick and goods are well packed.

I like Morgan. I've been buying from them for over 20 years now, including business purchases and I have grown to trust them. As for prices, I still compare before I buy, though the fact that I often go back to them tells its own story.

Summary: Well worth a look to grab a bargain
