Advantages: none
Disadvantages: theres not enough space to list the disadvantages
Whoa where to begin? im an employee of PC world (sales) an dont worry im very computer literate, whats that your thinkin? "wow a PC world sales advisor that actually knows a thing or two about PC's". We employ about 15 sales advisors an their are about 3 of us that know what were talking about. I know this is the age of computer technology but there are still many people who arn't computer literate an places like PC world pray on that fact, using peoples lack of technical knowledge to sell them over priced an occasionaly defective PC's, i say defective because ive done a stint in the customer service dept an the returns rate on some of the PC's and laptops are amazing. Instead of spending hundreds or possibly thousands on a PC in PC world i suggest u take that money an burn it or invest it into improving your technical knowledge either way u will get more out of ur money than parting with it in PC world. Once you improve your knowledge base on pc's an computer hardware you will start to see the major disadvantages of buying from a retail outlet like PC world. The sales advisors only role is to get you to part with ur cash an once you've purchased from the store you will receve very little in after sales support. I myself have been told by my managers to get people who are looking to buy, to spend 10 mins getting them to purchase an out of the store, to me thats not acceptable. With regards to sales the PC world motto is "sell up" if a customer wants to purchase a cheap PC we are told to advise on the disadvantages an then show them a more expensive model, that's ok if people want a gaming machine an you advise that a cheap PC with intergrated graphics wont be sufficient, however more oftern than not people are looking for a simple machine for browsing the net an word processing an "selling up" in this case is just wrong.
Now for the second part of the argument PC worlds extended warranty A.K.A PC Performance. every PC an laptop in PC world an all other PC retail outlets comes with a standard manufactures warranty which lasts 12 months, basically this warranty covers you against machine faults that may occur naturally (not accidental damage). the standard manufactures warranty isnt even worth wiping your arse with, have you ever tried to get a damaged pc repaired/replaced under a standard warranty? its a pain in the arse to say the least. So it's PC world to the rescue with their fabulous extended warranty "PC Performance" (you probably cant tell but im being sarcastic). this piece of shit aint much better than a standard manufacures warranty, at least with the manufactures warranty your gettin something useless for free. For starters PC Performance covers you againsed accidental damage if you damage your PC have no fear give PC world servicecall a ring an one of their brilliant technicians will be out to your house an if they cant fix it there they will take it away with them an have it repaired or replaced in 10 days, yeah right! for starters if you call PC services most of the time they cant be bothered to deal with you an tell you to take the damaged PC back to the store you bought it from, most of the time the store will inform you that it's PC servicecalls resposibility to repair it, it's just one vicious circle. Other aspects of PC Performance invole getting additional hardware such as RAM, HDD's an DVD/CD drives fitted for free which at a glance doesnt sound too bad but really, how hard is it to fit these devices? look it up in the net it takes about 15 mins of reading to learn how to fit such upgrades its really not that difficult. The only half decent thing about PC Performance is their 24hr sofware support line which charges at national rate but again most software issues can be easily resolved by a little browse time on the net. so in summary paying up to 9.99 a month for this service is money down the pan. Selling PC Performance to customers is an art in itself as most people are smart enough to decline buying it, in this case we are told to offer discounts on products the customer may be purchasing at the same time as their PC/laptop if they will purchase PC Performance, in other words we are told to bribe the customers which in escence is coercion, also we are told to offer them a month of free PC Performance taking the actual price of the PC Performance cover of the price of the PC or additional products. None of these are sound practice, if PC Performance was that great it would sell itself.
So if you have bothered to read this far you might be wondering why im bad mouthing the company i work for?
well yes it is because i hate working there an the reason i hate working for PC world is because of the bad practices that goes on within its stores other than that its a great working enviroment my work collegues are great people to work with an thats the only reason ive stuck it out this far in that shit hole, i dont get any job satisfaction from ripping people off. if your thinking of buying a PC from PC world an your reading this, i hope this post goes someway to disgourage you from buying at PC world an if it does it was worth taking the time to type it.
P.S i advise you steer clear of DELL as well, they have no face to face customer care an are just as bad as PC world. Learn to build your own pc, buy books, browse the net or do an intensive college course whatever the medium become more technically aware. The End
Summary: PC world EVIL !!!!

- 06/02/06 I too am employed by PC world , I love the job .
Im based in the clinic center , which involes help with tech issues and problem solving.
The amount of free help we give to not just customers but ' so called ' Tecnical people is very good.
Most people that use PC world have only the minimal pc knowlege , there fore we have 4 mircosoft qualifed tech guys , not just the basic qual but degrees in computer tech.Which they have personal funded.(these qual cost over £1000 to get )
With the Pc performance you get all the tech help you need and after the years warrenty has run out we will continue to support with tech help and if accidently damaged will we fix or replace the goods / or give vouchers to the same value as spent on the damaged item to get a new one.
For example a 5 year old pc with windows 98 on which was bought for £1500 is worth today £50 (if that ) my customer had had an accident with it and it was not repairerable so my customer was given £1500 in vochers to buy a new pc.
With that amount of money she bought a TOP SPEC pc . She was very grateful as there was noway in her present situation she could of ever have bought a new pc.
I have buoght 3 pc's from pc world and beacause i like to 'fiddle' with it , I also ways take out pc performance , wich you can 'pay as you go ' at around £6.99 a month is cool. If i accidently blow it up i get a new one :)
Sorry about spelling |

- 01/01/06 Interesting to get an insiders view.
I am aware that they pray on people's ignorance - you can tell that simply by walking into any PC World store and looking at the prices! They may be competitive on one or two high profile items, like a PC or a laptop, but everything else is marked up by a ridiculous amount.
As to the review, I'd be very cautios about using bad language as this does tend to make it look like a personal attack on the company, rather than an unbiased report. |

- 31/12/05 I use PC World Business and I find them great. Better support than Dell and a human face to talk to. |
