Advantages: Their store is big and has air conditioning, ... that's all I can think of.
Disadvantages: Customer service and after sales non-existent 'care'.
My review is based on my experience of my aftercare, so if you've had a better one - lucky you. I've read, seen and heard of other people experiences and unfortunately they're mostly negative.
Where I bought my pc, the staff who had served me are unhelpful and ignorant until they are taking my money. I've left there before with the feeling of coming back to wait outside for them... but that would get me into trouble and down to the level of that individual. I had purchase a warranty from them as I know very little about hardware, and in that time my motherboard blew. I called the non-helpline and they fixed an appointment for the following month. The engineer turned up late, spoke the most basic english only but he seemed to know what he was doing. No he didn't. To cut a very very long story short, after several high-priced phonecalls, I was told that each engineer is given a 20 minute slot to fix the problem and then go, he must had been in a hurry as he peed in and around my toilet leaving a disgusting mess over the surrounding floor. There was no sound regardless of how much I adjusted controls, PhoneAsst1 told me to download drivers which didn't work; PhoneAsst2 only warn me that I'd only lose my pictures on a performing the system restore the engineer should had done.... which those with IT minds will know will wipe the whole hard drive. I stupidly listened to this 'expert' and that's what happened. I was left on my own with no further help with a pc that produced a black screen when turned on. I had no choice but to go to an independent engineer who sorted my problem but I had to pay out for this.
I wrote to PC Servicecall/World and the reply was a complete fabrication of the events, they even said they had acted within the warranty, and it was my own choosing to go to someone else! I've the backing of Trading Standards as well because they too can see the crap in their reply! I'm actually very ill so I can do without all this but I can't just sit back and let them get away with such service.
I'll also add that, before this happened, I went into the PC World in Watford, and was served by one guy who was very polite and knew what he was talking about, and I was so pleased by this and told him so, and I am still using the LCD Monitor he sold me with no probs, so even I can see the good and bad; but on a whole, the majority of their staff look like people lacking Nescafe, ProPlus or a slap to wake them up. I will never shop there, especially the one in Staples Corner, unless there is a gun to my back forcing me to.
Funnily enough, there was a consumer TV programme where one employee called some of their own stock 'crap' to a customer!! But those who comment on here and work at PC World and say that their service is brilliant - there is a hell of a lot of your fellow personnel, be it in stores, helpline or after care, that is giving you a terrible name. Sorry for the lengthly post but this has been a bone of contention with me when I know I have been honest and polite.
Summary: Shoddy aftercare and when I complained, I received a complete fabrication of the sequence of events.

- 03/08/06 hmm.. sounds a bit false..
i hate people that insult businesses and then ontop of things exadurate the facts to make it seem worth insulting.
you say you got a booking for the following month suggesting you had to wait a month for the engineer to come around. did you forget to tell the readers that you may have called at the end of the month and that you were only waiting a few days.
if i was waiting a month i would have gone straight back to the shop and got a replacement.
h igh price phonecalls.. well its not £1 a min, its not 50p a min its not even 15p a min. most it will be is 7p a minute peak which after 20 minutes is £1.40. thats standard national rate, if you have it under BT friends and family or you use talk talk then its even cheaper. call in the evening after work its under 4p i think that you may spend more on your coffee and sandwiches each day then a phonecall to the engineers. so advise on problem solving for less then a sandwich is cheap to me.
The computers come with built in features which give you the ability to do a destructive (lose everything) restore or a quick restore (keeps personal files). so you have got the option, plus its always set to quick unless you actually MANUALLY select descructive.
i go to one of the pcworlds regularly and i have no problems at all.. my advise is to ask questions.. the staff are not on commission so they aint money hungry their bonuses are customer service based not product selling based. so i believe either you picked on a warehouse chap or you were expecting a hyper hyper sales colleague on drugs and caffiene and stuff.. i dunno, you tell me
their aftercare is great, my laptop failed and they were around next business day. yes next business day.
note to all please be accurate, most english businesses are going belly up. this is because you all are asking for products under purchase prices. you then want experts to serve you and you wonder how the businesses can afford to pay saleries of people with degree's and not make a profit at the same time. no wonder why businesses move abroard. and then you complain that you cant understand their accents. if i was you i would forget about the best prices around and start thinking of the service. looking for bargains and asking for discounts will make all businesses give bad service because they cant afford to pay good staff and give everyone a bargain at same time. they do try. but you have yourselves to blame. i buy my stuff from them regularly and i am happy because i know exactly what im getting. ask them questions, pick their brains. they have a technical department, ask them for advise if you dont want to spend £1.40 on the phone.. even speak to the manager if you have problems. dont insult a business because you not hear the instructions properly. - 23/07/06 You've got me thinking now as I bought my current PC from PC World back in December and have had only a few little hiccups which were sorted over the phone but you've got me wondering about what should happen if my computer goes totally on the blink in the future!
I guess it's a "wait and see" situation. I only hope that if I need an engineer out, it'll go better than your visit. I might also refuse them access to my toilet or send them out into the garden should they need to pee!
Take care and I hope you have better luck in the future!
