Advantages: Convenience
Disadvantages: Poorly trained staff, can be a lot more expensive than online
Ever since I started using the internet, most purchases for computer components have been online for the simple reason that the prices have tended to be much cheaper.
Recently I decided to have a look around PC World to see what the current range of products and prices are like in comparison to online retailers such as Ebuyer. In general some computer components and peripherals such as webcams and keyboards tend to be reasonable, however some items such as single hard discs components and graphics card can be as much as twice the price.
This year I needed a new printer, the model I wanted was available from PC World for only £5 more than Ebuyer. Rather than have to wait for the inconvenience of waiting for a delivery I visited PC World to enquire about availability.
First thing to note, trying to get the attention of a member of staff is very difficult. It seems often the shop is understaffed and if you do ask to speak to someone they give the impression that they can't be bothered. Finally finding someone, I am told they do not have the item in stock but will definitely have on the following Monday since this is when they receive deliveries. The following Monday I arrive, they do not have it and a member of staff informs me that I have been misinformed since they do not know when they receive deliveries for specific products.
With this poor service, I simply gave up and ordered it online anyway. I get the impression the staff at PC World prefer to help out technophobes since there is less of threat in being challenged on their lack of understanding of computers.
Overall I would not recommend PC World, the staff just do not seem properly trained neither do they seem to take any interest in what they do. If you are looking for a serious computer retailer try Micro Anvika instead.
Summary: Not recommended

- 01/01/08 It is different in different stores, although the staff are generally stressed due to lack of them! Susan |

- 31/12/07 I've bought a few bits and bobs from them, usually in their January sale. Got a good bargain on a 300Gb external hard drive last year. (Even cheaper than eBay!)
I've noticed that they're understaffed as well. |
