Advantages: You get the item right away
Disadvantages: Expensive, Useless staff
PC World, that happy place where families go to buy everything they want to meet their computing needs - or so they`d like you to think. The reality of PC World is a computer superstore - they`ve got almost anything you could ever want, but that isn`t enough in itself. To start with the prices are on the extravagant side to say the least - if you shop about on the internet you can normall save at least 20-25% on the price, maybe more. Having said that, every now and again PC World do special offers, which if you can get one (they tend to reserve the limited stock special offers for staff first, and this normally means they don`t have any of the really good deals available to the public at all) are worth buying. There is also the advantage that if you absolutely positively need something the same day, PC World can often be your only chance of getting it. If you don`t have an independant store near you your only real choices are ordering items over the internet and waiting for them to be delivered, or paying through the nose at PC World. Even if you ignore the prices (not very easy to do if you have any clue on the real value/cost of the items in question) the next thing you`ll notice is the service, or more likely the lack thereof. The staff are on a very poor wage, and it shows in their dedication to the job in hand. Try asking them a technical question, and just watch their faces go blank. It doesn`t even have to be a hard question - for an example ask them if a particular PC has got an ISA slot. Unless the information is given on the label on the PC, they just don`t know. Obviously there are exceptions to this, every now and again you`ll find a member of staff who knows what they are talking about and are willing to help you without trying to sell you anything, but these occasionas are few and far between. In conclusion, about the only reason anyone should ever use PC World is if they`ve got a special offer on an
item you want, or if you absolutely need a part that very momeny and can`t afford to wait for it to turn up in the post. Apart from that do yourself and everyone else a favour and boycott this poor excuse for a store untuil they raise their standard.

- 19/06/02 IMHO the service doesn`t matter when the prices are this bad. Then again, as I said in the opinion "next thing you`ll notice is the service, or more likely the lack thereof" Says it all really.
I`ve bought floppy drives and the like from them, since they end up cheaper after postage from an online store. Anything else can wait an extra day or two and i`ll get a better item for less money. |
