Advantages: err I spose they'll fix it if it goes wrong

Disadvantages: annual service is a waste of time, it takes weeks to book in, a 1 hour job takes a weekend!

On purchasing my first "proper" computer, a young lady with an attractive cleavage did a cracking selling job on me, persuading me to part with an additional £300 for a 5 year warranty! I suspect the cleavage clouded my judgement.

Anyway, part of the deal was the opportunity to take my computer in to PC World once a year for an annual service!

Mmmmmmmmmmm.

Well, I discovered firstly that you have to give about three weeks notice!

Secondly, while they say it should be a same day service, the reality is that it is a 2 day job, so you have to cope without your favourite toy for a whole weekend!

Finally, read the checklist of what they check! This cracked me up!!!

They check whether you've got enough RAM - well after selling me a machine which I later discovered had inadequate RAM, I had already quadroupled the capacity privately.

They check if your hard disk space is adequate. Realising that my disk space was inadequate, I had already doubled this!

They virus check your machine. I can;t remember which anti-virus checker they used, but it identified 0 known viruses. My machine already knew, thanks to my pc-cillin software, that I had 5 minor viruses quarantined on the hard drive. Most impressive that PC World are unable to identify these. Not the most reassuring thing ever!

Best of all, they defrag your hard drive for you. Strangely, I do this anyway at least once a week.

In summary DO NOT BUY A WARRANTY FROM PC WORLD SIMPLY TO GET THE ANNUAL SERVICE!

In fact, if you have a spare £300, stick it in a savings account and put it towards upgrading or replacing your computer in future - you'll get a lot more for your money!

Additionally, do not buy additional RAM or Hard Drive from PC World. The local pokey computer shop (I use a place called Planet Micro between Manchester and Oldham) can supply all these items for around half the price of P
C world. And they charge 2/3rds less to install items if you are a complete technophobe, although most additions are incredibly easty to make.

lol, defragging your hardrive every week? Some people have a lot of time on their hands! In my opinion the defragmentation option isnt worth the code it's written with. It's a good way to waste electricity (and your Hard drive of course, by over working those poor head mechanisms).

Please don't tell me that you see a performance benefit after doing it..you are much better off by reinstalling your operating system every 6 months or so - takes roughtly the same amount of time as a Defrag with 20 times the results!

Warrenty at pcworld is the only good thing they sell. After having bought a computer there 3 years ago they have upgraded twice and will be doing again shortly the reason for this is they cant fix computers so have to upgrade instead..
(6wks after computer goes wrong according to their service agreement)
