Advantages: various range stock, lots of it
Disadvantages: unhelpful staff, don't know what they're doing, the list could go on forever
Thinking of going to PC World then? Well the only advantage to going is that they sell a wide range of products but if it’s help or advice you need then forget it. Yes you heard me, forget it. A flock of geese would probably give you more help than the help or should I say lack of help the customer service team members in that store give out. Want to see why I have such a negative feeling towards them? Then read on………………. Oh sorry I forgot to mention – this is the Peterborough store my opinion is based on. Firstly I will just tell you something that my boyfriend Paul was told when he was 18. He didn’t have a job and was looking for work in a computer field, as he loves computers. He knows everything about computers. He even used to build them from scratch when he was 11. He has a lot of books and magazines on computers and has learnt so much since growing up, that he is now a software development manager. He writes computer software and does computer programming. I am so proud of him. Well anyway, when he was 18, he thought he stood a good chance of getting a job in PC World because he had so much knowledge. He went to his interview with confidence. But, yes there’s a but and a big one at that…he was told something, which shocked him… His interviewer (the manager of the store), told him he wasn’t the kind of person he was looking for. They didn’t want someone with knowledge of computers; they wanted someone who could sell computers. They didn’t care that Paul could give the customer’s advice or help, or that he had taken a computer course at college, that didn’t matter. So Paul came out of his interview very annoyed. What he didn’t know, was that was actually a good thing, or else he would never have got where he is now. So to summarise the above, PC World do not employ and will never employ people wh
o know anything about computers, they will employ someone if they are good at selling. PC World WANTS money NOT happy customers. That is so true. Secondly, I must tell you about the good parts of the store. This is what attracted Paul and I there in the first place – the range of goods. They sell computers, printers, cameras, scanners, chairs, desks, loads of books, rooters, CD’s, leads, paper etc. You will find almost anything in there you will need. Just take my advice – look for what you need, don’t ask the staff because they don’t have a clue. At the end of every aisle, they have a basket full of bargains. This is the place to look if you want something cheaper. They are also open every day of the week and until 8pm weekdays, which is great, if you don’t finish work til 6pm. There is also a lot of space in there, so you wont feel cramped. Every time we go in there, there is only ever 1 person on the till and the queues are usually very long. So I guess you can compare this to pop manufacturers. Pop Manufacturers don’t work with people who make their own songs, they write the songs for little pop kiddies, to make loads of money. PC World employ people who don’t know anything about computers, so that someone who has knowledge of computers wont tell the customers what they’re really buying i.e. something crap, that doesn’t work. This is how they make their money. From lying to customers. Maybe the reason why the employers aren’t trained in their work is because it would cost the store too much money and oh no, they can’t give any of their precious money away can they? And if they train their employees, they will have enough knowledge to know that PC World computers are dodgy. Yes very dodgy!!! My parents brought a computer 2 years ago, from this dodgy company. How many times did they have to take it int
o the store to get it checked out? I’ve lost count now. How many times were the team on the customer services desk unhelpful? I’ve lost count now. How many times did they have to ask about 3 members of staff a question before one of them gave them an answer? Too many to count. PC World charge about £20 for a computer health check. What a rip off! Paul has got a disk that he puts into the computer to do the health check on. It takes 2 minutes. You go into PC World. They click around your computer to see what you have done on it, feed you loads of crap about what you should buy to make it better (which in fact would make it worse), then pretend they are checking it for viruses etc, when all they need to do is put a disk in that tells them if it’s ok, then take the disk out and the health check is completed. Remember don’t buy their computers, they always crash! My parents have a Compaq and it was sold to us with less than half of the memory it should have and it is also so unreliable and slow. Don’t ever ring the PC World help line if you are tempted to do so, will you? My Dad rang with help he needed on the computer and he was on hold for half an hour when he decided to give up. Paul decided to test out PC World to see if the employees were as thick as 2 short planks. The test proved positive. He looked around the shelves for a certain lead that he needed. I can’t remember now what it was called. He couldn’t find one and went to the help desk. There were 2 members of staff standing there doing nothing. As soon as Paul and I reached the desk, they hurriedly walked off to another part of the store. They saw us and ignored us on purpose. Well we waited at the desk, getting more impatient by the second, when another member of staff came up to the desk. He tried to avoid eye contact then walked off again. We waited at the desk for a further 5
minutes w hen someone finally came to the desk. Paul asked him if he sold the leads and you should have seen the man’s face. He looked down at the floor and his face went red. He then walked off without saying anything and we heard him saying to the manager, “do we sell those leads?” We saw the manager shake his head and say, “No, I doubt it very much, tell them Dixon’s do”. Unbelievable….. The man finally came back and said, “No sorry we don’t, Dixon’s do though”. “Pathetic bunch of crap employees”, sighed Paul. Well anyway we get to Dixon’s (It’s only 1 minute walk from PC World), and the staff smiled as soon as we got in through the door. We saw one of those leads on a shelf for an expensive price, that Paul thought was a rip off and knew would be cheaper if PC World sold it, then a man comes round to ask if we need any help. We noticed on his badge, it said Manager. Paul asked him the same question he’d asked the man in PC World and he replied with “No, I’m afraid we don’t stock them. PC World sell them” He smiled and walked off, obviously thinking he’d got out of that one. Paul went back to PC World and spotted the same man and told him that Dixon’s told him they did sell them in here. This time the man asked about 3 other employees, all of them saying they didn’t think so. Or rather they didn’t know!!! Paul asked to see the manager. They said he wasn’t there, even though he’d been talking to him earlier. A bunch of liars too!!!! Paul ended up walking round the whole shop and finally found some. They were much cheaper than in Dixon’s. He grabbed it hoping nothing else would go wrong. We went to the till and they decided to change the till woman when we got to the till. Of course!! I mean that always happ
ens to us. Why couldn’t they have 2 cashiers on? There was a huge queue behind us. And then the woman in front of us, needed help so the one cashier had to go and sort that out. In the end after waiting in the queue for 15 minutes, we gave up and went out without the lead. All I can say is PC World give out extremely poor service. Unhelpful staff, no knowledge of computers, long waiting time and ignorant! Yes that just about sums it up.

- 14/10/02 I use PC World for peripherals, and agree with you that no member of staff can give any imformation above what is written on the box. However, my Hewlett Packard came from PC World 3 years ago and has been trouble free. (Fingers crossed now I have said that). |

- 02/10/02 Good point, gumdrops, but when you're not completely PC literate and are looking at spending maybe £1500 on a computer you'd like to think there's someone that can give you some useful advice... |

- 02/10/02 Is it really unreasonable for a shop to sell stuff? Staff in my local Sainsbury's are unlikely to know the secret to a good risotto, the best year in any given Chilean vinyard or how to get banana out of silk, but it doesn't make it a bad supermarket! |
