Bought the protek Ultra MX,by mail order almost 12 months ago.Spent more time chasing them up for the order, than I could have imagined. It has 32Mb Ram, 4.3Gb hard drive, with speakers and 40xCD-ROM.Total cost £239.00.Not bad you may say,but unfortunately they have now gone down the tube. There had been persitent rumours in the computer magazines that deliveries were tardy,so no surprise there then. However, for the money,I think it is quite a good machine, and so far the memory is enough for my needs,I dont play games much and is mainly used for the internet and writing letters. Theres no graphics card, but may get one later for game palying for my daughter, but it does perform quite well when using the internet and for ICQ etc. Pity they are no longer around, especially as they sent us a free mobile phone with a good deal with it.Oh well!
I bought a computer system from them, it was cheap at the time, and they were all nice to me until I gave them my credit card number. After that, the problems started. There were delays in the delivery. They were speaking to me like I was nothing until I threatened them to get my solicitor in touch with them. Well, two days later I received the machine. They said to me that the motherboard was an ATX, with USB ports on it, but it was an old piece of junk. About 2 months ago, I wanted to sell my computer for a better system. I then found out that they were going into liquidation. The five years guarantee on the computer was going to the gutter. Results, I cannot use the guarantee as a sales argument. Please if you want to save your money and not to be ripped off, do not even bother with them bandits!!!!
Cowboys ! That's the only word that can describe this company. I'm glad to hear from another review that they've gone out of business. I bought my computer from them in 1998 - it's now 2000 and I've just sorted it out. I think they just put a collection of components on the desk and swept them into a box. The problem it seems was that the modem they supplied was not compatible with the processor they used, according to the documentation on the modem disk! I could have done that ! The lesson I learnt is only buy this kind of stuff from a shop or somewhere that you can EASILY take it back to. My system went to Devon twice after it was delivered and I can't tell you how much time and effort it took just to get through on the phone to these fools. Never again.....Mail order is for books or CDs....I have been burnt!
Note for all those who have recently ordered from Protek and those still responding to their advertisement. They have as of Monday 3rd July 2000, ceased trading and may well be going into liquidation. The liquidaters are Jackson Norton of Bristol. Recently I had the misfortune to order a system from Protek, yes they are cheap, yes you have the facility to upgrade some of the components. But that is all it has going for it. I ordered my system 8th of June and am still waiting. Trying to get through to these people is not good at the best of times, now it seems they don't even answer their phones. BT say there is not a fault on the line, it must be with their switchboard. Why are we surprised! I got a letter from them, quoting the wrong order code and getting their dates all wrong, does not instill confidence at all. Have tried ringing their local trading standards office, who too are continually engaged, it must be a full time job just tracking this one company. In short, assuming they haven't gone into receivership, if you have time to kill and love eating stress for breakfast, then go ahead make an order. But do so with the protection of VISA or its ilk,
Protek computers are perhaps the cheapest mail order company found in the computer magazine. Before you jump ahead with your credit card to purchase a computer for bargain prices, repeat after me. “You get what you pay for”. The computer we ordered experienced a four week delay in delivery, over the estimated delivery date. This meant that six weeks passed before it was delievered. What makes it worse is their slow to answer telephone customer services continued to give empty promises throughout that period saying that ‘it will be there in a couple of days’. When we did finally get it, the keyboard was broken, the mouse missing and the wrong software. Worse of all, there was no soundcard which means no sound. Phoning up to complain did no good, then always say put the complaint in writing. The managers refuse to speak on the phone. I contacted the trading standards and they said that they had a number of complaints, they tried but failed to get any response from the company. We are still waiting for our sound card. I would never go to such a company again. Which leads me to conclude. You get what you pay for!
