I felt inspired to write this op because (1) following on from the doom and gloom of my dvdplayers.co.uk op, I have something positive to say and (2) the only other opinion on this site so far is pretty negative, and completely different from my experience. Given that the previous opinion was written a couple of years ago, I feel it's time to give a more up-to-date view, as hopefully Technoworld have brushed up their act since then.
+++Who are Technoworld?+++
Technoworld.com are based in North West London, and mostly sell computers and computer peripherals, digital cameras and fax machines. According to the site itself, "Technoworld PLC is an established reseller of computer hardware and related software and peripherals since 1995."
+++Site layout+++
The site is quite gawdy in yellow and blue, but it's bright and attention-grabbing. A menu down the left-hand side means easy navigation through the various product types available. Click on 'accessories' for example, and another more detailed list will appear, e.g. keyboards, joystick, cables, to enable you to make a better selection and get closer to the product you're searching for. Alternatively, you can use the menu on the right to choose products by manufacturers such as IBM, Toshiba, Sony, etc. The site boasts the Which? Web Trader consumer association logo (although I am amused to note from the Which webiste that the Which Web Trader scheme is now closed!) All in all, I found Technoworld an easy site to get around.
The front page details the best deals of the day, and there is also a link to the site's "Clearance" section which has the current offers listed.
+++Price+++
"The mission of Technoworld PLC is to provide customers with quality and professional service with competitive pricing no matter who or what size the customer is."
I was looking for a laptop, and google searches had taken me to Da
bs, bestlaptop and other similar sites. However, the prices for the specification of laptop I was after were more than I was prepared to pay. One of my friends recommended a laptop on Dabs, which looked quite good, (although perhaps below the spec I wanted), and was listed as being a special offer. However, when I entered the make and model number into a further google search, the same product showed up as being available at Technoworld much cheaper. The IBM Thinkpad R31 is currently £574.57 from Dabs, but only £527.58 at Technoworld, a saving of almost £47! The cheapest postage for this exact product works out at £6 from Dabs and £5.86 at Technoworld, so this at least is comparable with other sites and nothing really to write home about, although I have seen some sites selling laptops and charging £30.00 for delivery!
Delivery charges are currently as follows:
Next 1-2 working days - £4.99 (£5.86 inc VAT)
Next working day - £9.99 (£11.74 inc VAT)
Next working day Pre 12.00 AM - £14.99 (£17.61 inc VAT)
Northern Ireland Next 2- 3 working days - £14.99 (£17.61 inc VAT)
Looking around and comparing various models on different sites, one thing was clear, Technoworld are pretty cheap! I chose a model of laptop and was confident I was getting a good deal on price.
+++Product information+++
Clicking on one of the many products available will provide you with fairly detailed information about the product itself. For example, if you choose a laptop, the full specification of the laptop will be listed underneath a picture of the product. If, however, you need more details, it is worth noting that you can email Technoworld (details are easy to find via the "contact information" link) with questions you may have. I queried them by email and had a full response in under ten minutes. Given the disaster I had in contacting dvdplayers.co.uk (reviewed recently), I was reassured that Technoworld might actually deli
ver, and that there was a face behind the name!
Once you have chosen your product, it's simply a case of entering in the quantity required and clicking on "buy." You do then have to register and create an account but this is no more tedious than putting in your details for delivery and payment etc. Creating an account gives you the option then of tracking your order online at Technoworld.com, by clicking on "order status" on the site's home page.
+++After ordering/delivery+++
An email of your order will be sent to the email account you registered containing details of the order you've just made. It should be simply a case of sitting back and waiting for your order, although the email I received said that they'd email me further if there was a problem with my order, so it is possible they won't deliver as promised. I paid £9.99 for next day delivery and received my product via courier within 24 hours of ordering. If however you have any difficulties, there are a variety of ways to contact Technoworld, listed on the "contact information" page. Unlike dvdplayers.co.uk, I notice that Technoworld have a 'phone number listed on their website, so at least you have half a chance at ringing them up and shouting at them if things don't work out. I'm happy to say I didn't have to test this side of things, but of course this means I can't comment on their after sales service.
+++Returns+++
Again, I haven't had to use this side of the service, but Technoworld's returns policy is clearly listed under "information." This is very detailed, covering many eventualities and product types. It's worthwhile giving these returns conditions a read to make sure you get it right if you want to return. As with Dabs, all products must be returned in their original packaging. You must also get a Returns Authorisation Number from Technoworld before attempting a
return. The policy doesn't state where to get this from but there are many contact numbers, emails and fax numbers to try!
+++Overview+++
From my limited experience, Technoworld deliver at low prices and I would recommend them if you are thinking of buying computers or related accessories. I had no complaints at all about the service I received. If you are choosing a computer, I'd say it's worth checking out the prices Technoworld have to offer.
