Advantages: Sturdy, Durable, Reliable, Powerful, easy to store and clean
Disadvantages: Price, difficult to use if you have weak wrists, noisy
A few months ago I entered into a "bake-off" at work, then promptly realised I didn't have a mixer, or processor of any kind at my current abode it was all in storage at my mums, so off I took myself to Waitrose to purchase a hand mixer to tide me over. The HM324 is avaible in black, with the HM320 being (I believe) the same version in white, which is slightly cheaper.
**Price and where to buy**
I paid around the £25 mark for this mixer, at the time I thought it was extortionate, and now I still think its extortionate however a quick glance at the web and the cheapest I have found is Argos at £27.99, so maybe I bagged myself a mini bargain, the mixer in white is coming in cheaper starting from £23. I personally prefer the black appliance as I think the white looks a little bit cheap.
The mixer is available from all good department stores, online at the likes of Argos. Strangely it is NOT available on the kenwood website, I presume this is because they are promoting their newest hand mixers and update accordingly.
**Settings, appliances and noise**
The mixer comes with 2 different attachments, the standard "egg beater" attachment and the 2 spiral shaped attachments. I have only ever used the egg beater attachment, though I think that the spirals can be used to make bread dough, which would make sense and actually I am inspired to attempt that tomorrow....but I digress....the attachments are easy to attach to the body of the mixer, you simply push them into the holes and turn slightly. I have no problems with them not being attached fully and falling off halfway through, they are very secure.
The mixer is 250 watt, so it is powerful, though I probably couldn't tell you the difference between a 200W and a 250W, I just know that my mixer is powerful enough to beat what I want it to beat!! The mixer has 3 settings, slow, medium and fast. I find even the slow to be quite fast, but I am comparing that to beating by hand. You can sense a definite difference as you work up through the speeds and the mixer vibrates quite heavily in your hand when you are on the fastest setting so I would say this hand mixer is not the way forward if you have weak wrists. It is not heavy to hold and move about, its just the vibration through your hand and arm that threw me the first few things I used it!
The noise, mixers are noisy, there is no getting round that. This mixer is no different, with the noise level increasing as the settings are higher, it reminds me of a plane revving up to take off!
**Cleaning and Storage**
I must confess I am lazy, my mixer will stretch to the sink so I stretch it over and put the attachment in the water and switch the blender on for a minute or so, this gets the worst of whatever I have been mixing off. Following that, I simply de-attach the beaters by pressing the grey button on the top of the mixer and they pop out of the holes. I then wash as normal in the sink, though they are dishwasher proof if that is your preffered method of cleaning. The mixer, I wipe over with a damp cloth.
Storage, I simply store in the cupboard with the attachments in the cutlery draw as I threw out the plastic storage holder by accident. The cord wraps neatly round the mixer and it really takes up little room in the cupboard.
Lovely little mixer, and if other reviews are anything to go buy it looks as though this is one purchase I will not have to re-make as the kenwood mixers are highly durable, mines lasted well for the last 2 months and I am confident that it will last into the future!
