Apple iPad 2 Smart Cover
Advantages: Folding helps with typing etc, keeps screen scratch free and cleans finger prints from screen
Disadvantages: Doesn't protect the back of the iPad
I ended up buying it directly from the Apple store as I had read some stories online about the counterfeit and generic smart covers released for the iPad 2 not working on the new iPad due to the magnets being repositioned or something along those lines so I wanted to make sure that I was going to be getting myself a genuine Apple smart cover that would definitely work with my iPad.
There were two different smart covers available in leather or polyurethane. The leather one would have set me back £59 which I thought was on the steep side so I went for the cheaper polyurethane one that was still quite expensive at £35. Both the leather and the polyurethane smart covers come in a variety of different colours so you can give your iPad a little bit of your personality.
The smart cover is ultra-thin and light so it doesn't add extra weight and bulk to your iPad. It has a four way folding mechanism so that you can fold it on itself when you want to open the cover and use your iPad. This folding part works really well and is quite a clever design.
The reason for the folding mechanism is so that the smart cover becomes multi-functional. The cover can fold back on itself and act as a stand for the iPad which is really handy for when you are sitting with it on a desk and want to type. Personally I find this great especially on the train where I can securely position my iPad on the tray so that I can watch movies etc. without having to hold my iPad the whole way as it can be uncomfortable to hold for long periods of time.
You can also just flip the smart cover to the back of the iPad so that it is completely out of the way if you are lying in bed and using it to read a book etc. When it is placed behind the iPad it is light and thin enough that I can pretty much forget it is even there.
Probably the smartest thing about the smart cover is just how it connects to your iPad. IPads contain magnets in them so that the smart cover can just seamlessly attach itself to the sides of an iPad. This works amazingly well and the smart cover feels really secure when it is in place. I like the fact that I don't have to faff around with attaching clips or anything and it just works straight away with no hassle or complication.
The other really cool thing about the smart cover is that it sends your iPad to sleep when you close it and then it immediately wakes it up again when you open it up. This might not sound that amazing but it is really nice to be able to just open up the smart cover and be able to immediately see my iPad screen and have access to my apps. It only saves seconds but is a cool little feature nether the less and it also really does help to conserve the battery life when it is closed and automatically sending the iPad to sleep.
The polyurethane that the cover is made from is easy to keep clean and normally all it takes is a quick wipe down to keep it looking spick and span. I also really like the inside of the cover which is a microfiber material and this does actually clean the screen when it is closed which for me is one of its main selling points as I am finding my iPad to be a real fingerprint magnet.
Although I love my smart cover there are some downsides to it. Even though it does protect the screen from scratches spills it isn't going to offer heavy duty protection. It will do a good enough job in your bag etc. from stopping the screen being damaged but if you dropped your iPad then I have serious doubts the smart cover would be able to do anything to stop the screen from getting cracked.
It also does absolutely nothing at all to protect the aluminium back of the iPad. I have already noticed a couple of scratches on the back on the aluminium so I am going to have to invest in another case just for the back so ideally I would have liked it if Apple could have incorporated the smart cover with some sort of protection for the back of the iPad as well.
Being from Apple the smart cover is both stylish and functional and overall I would highly recommend that you purchase yourself a smart cover. It might not offer the best protection but one of the reasons for buying an iPad is because of how they look and feel and buying a big bulky case that adds weight will detract from both its appearance and also just how lightweight and thin they are.
It does offer reasonable protection against screen damage and it is actually a true multi-tasking product and the folding mechanism makes the iPad much more useable and offers a variety of different angles to view media or type. The fact that it actually cleans the screen and gets rid of fingerprints when it is closed is a brilliant bonus of this over other covers. It is just a shame that I have to go and spend more money buying something else to protect the back of my iPad.
