Advantages: Look, Design, Features
Disadvantages: None Really
Once again it was time for me to change phones as my Samsung has finally decided to stop working. But this time I wanted a phone which was better battery life, better memory and light in colour. I was fed up with my wee black phone.
Now the frantic search had began and I knew that I wanted another slide phone at this time I was not sure if I wanted a contract phone or a pay as you go. I wanted to be connected to the orange network and I wanted it to hold lots of music.
With that in mind I starting looking on Ebay, Argos, Carephone warehouse and Orange.co.uk within a few minutes I have noticed that the Sony Ericsson W range seem to offer what I was looking for. W means the walkman range.
That's it I have decided on the Sony Ericsson W910i Model on the orange network.
*****Price and Availability******
Most networks offer it on contract for free - Check the full terms and conditions
Pay as you go
www.orange.co.uk - £199 requires £10 top up Total £209.99
www.carphonewarehgouse.co.uk £199 on 02 and Virgin
www.ebay.co.uk - BIN £179.99 inc postage
If you buy from any of these outlets remember and check if you can get cashback too. I personally use Quidco.com and they offer you cashback on all these retailers.
******Network******
Ok I got this on Orange but on checking further it is available on all networks on a both Pay as you go or contract . If bought from Ebay you are more likely to have a unlocked phone.
*****What's in the box when you receive it? *****
Well if you get a new boxed phone you will find the following in it.
Your brand new Sony Ericsson W910i all sealed -
Your battery - Will require a full charge
Sim Card attached to what look likes a envelope - Be care how you detach it in case you break it
Full comprehensive instruction booklet
Charger along with your hand free kit and your ariel for the radio.
USB cable and a CD which you need to install to allow you to add music to your phone
and a 2meg memory stick
Ok so once you have fully charged the phone and spent the best part of a hour or so your ready to turn the wee beauty on. That was the first time I have picked up a phone and went "eh where do I turn this on" so there is a very small button on top of the phone which turns it on and off. Not the easiest button to press when the slider is open.
*****Features*****
Aside the normal features such as Alarm, Calculator, World time, Timers, Stop watch and so on. I will cover the features that I believe make this phone better than others.
* Making and receiving calls - Simple really as the buttons are easy to press, dial the number and press the green call button to the left of the phone as you look at it. Now you have a few options when answering it, slide the phone up and it will automatically answer. Or you can press the green accept button. To end a call simple press the red hang-up button. Ease of use 10/10
* Texting - something that I do lots of. It's so easy on this phone weather you use predictive text or tap text. To get in to the message menu you can simply click on main menu and then enter the message one. Or if your text daft like me set it up as a quick key. I mean when I press my arrow to the left I am given the message menu. So you have written your message, now to work out how to send it. You can either look up your phone book and select who you want, enter a number or you can use a number that you have previously text. This phone saves the names/numbers you frequently text and you can choose them from the list. Very simply here. The predictive text has a good variation of words, unfortunately it does not have any Scottish words well the slang ones. Its easy to add a word to predicative texts memory, when you have the option to spell just ok it and add the word. I have had over 100 text messages stored in this phone and not been prompted to delete. 10/10 from me.
* Camera - at the touch of a button you have a wonderful 2.0m camera. Very clear and crisp pictures that seem to turn out very well even when taken in low light. Great little zoom on this allowing you to make sure you have all the detail. With the internal memory of 35mb you can save lots of pictures. Camera allow you to choose so many settings including lowering the pixels too 1 million, adjusting the light too daylight, Cloudy etc, changing the effects Black and White negative etc and no to forget about the timer option for those self portraits. The camera also acts as your video recorder too and allows you to records clips. Once again quality is good. Beware the phone picks up all the noise from round about...... over all 10/10
* Walkman - How could I not go on about this feature after all its one of the reasons I bought the phone. So walkman I hear you all say.... Well at the point of this review I have 180 songs stored on it and I have lots of room still available to add even more. Yeah I did say 180 that roughly 15 full albums. Not bad for a phone. In my eyes its bloody fantastic. The thing that amazes me is that this little beauty does not slow down just because I have all those songs on it. I love the way the phone sorts all the songs by artist, year, genre, albums doing this allows me to quickly track down what I want play. Sound quality is fantastic from the phone and the volume is pretty loud. What I like is you can set up the phone to jump between all your songs which makes sure I get a good mix, or if your walking with the phone in your hand you can press a button a slightly shake it and the track will jump on to the next track.
Phone also has a FM radio which really does pick up all your radio station that your car radio does, you can either just plug the ariel in and lye the phone down or if your on the go you can plug your hands free in to the ariel and that will both allow you to receive the signal and hear your favourite radio stations.
* Other features (Quick overview) Bluetooth is a must for all phones and this little beauty has that feature too, easy to use and certainly easy to send items via it.
Speaker phone for when you have left your hands free kit at home, Vibration alert unlike many other this is really quiet when on vibrate, Flight mode allowing you to use the walkman whilst the rest of the phone is disabled, Emailing and MMS send and receive from this phone with ease.
*Battery Life- I work 12hrs a day over the period of 4 days and my phone is always with me. I send in excess of 20/30 messages a day and make approximately 20mins of calls per day too. My phone is only ever charged up after all my shifts so its last without any problems for the full 4 shifts. However if I was to use the phone as a walkman or radio the battery needs charged up daily. Overall the battery life is good. Once the battery is needing charged I leave it on for 4hrs and that seems to fully charge it.
*****All important look*****
Stylish, sleek, slim and no I am not describing myself I am still talking about my phone. Black in colour with a very snazzy silver sick in the middle. In my own opinions it's a phone that says I am up-to-date. All the buttons are the right size, not too small or large like many other. The lcd is a extremely good size and this itself is a huge benefit too. The charger port is on the side and not constantly visible,
3.9 x 2.0 x 0.5 inches
86 g in weight
240x320 pixel 262,144-colour TFT Screen
The software you get with the phone allows you to take a full CD and add it top your phone just by dragging and dropping it really is that easy
You can buy additional Accessories such as Portable Bluetooth speaker, Bluetooth hands free kits, Desk stand/charge, memory and few others. I have not bought anything extra for my phone
Ok so that's the phone through my eyes, so here are my final thoughts.
This is a easy phone to use which is very stylish and has lots too offer the user, all the features are easy to use and you can simply adjust all the menus to suit your very own needs. The quality of the sound is good whether its on a call or listening to music. Texting is so easy as the buttons are soft on your fingers, you don't seem to get sore fingers like I did on my last one. Thing that means I text so much. Instructions and software you get with the phone cover what you need to know and they cover it very good too, not too much information and credit to sony as they failed to fill my head with nonsense. There instructions are simple and very easy to follow. Software basic and very simple to use but its certainly all you will ever need. Setting up the phone was very easy and within a few minutes I was making calls from and a few minutes after that I was able to send text messages. Thanks to Sony I also have a free 2m memory stick as I received it with the phone.
