Advantages: Great features, reliable, fun!
Disadvantages: cost?
The iphone 3g is the start of the mobile revolution!
I was a little sceptical when the phone was launched, and was by no means willing to spend around £400 for the handset, or sign up for an expensive 18 month contract to test the device out. Luckily, I was given one as a company mobile, and have not looked back since!
The iphone looks cool, has unlimited cool and funky applications and this combined alongside the 3G technology makes for a truely awesome piece of technology. Traveling on public transport is no longer boring and I can work from anywhere (given that you can sync the email up with outlook, gmail, yahoo and several other email providers).
Browsing the internet is fairly easy on the iphone, just like using a laptop but a little more fiddley. You can enlarge the text on the screen just by gliding your fingers across it and you can visit any of the sites you would normally visit on a PC. There are fast links to certain sites on the interface (e.g. youtube, google) and you can download certain applications to make accessing other sites easier (such as a facebook app). I wouldn't use this to browse the internet at home as it is still far easier to do so on a computer, however for surfing the net when you are out and about, it is spot on.
The 16G harddrive is more than enough space for games, music (itunes) and lightsabers (free downloadable application). Another one of the more useful features of the Iphone 3G is the Google Maps feature. Using the in built GPS, the phone is able to pinpoint your position with remarkable accuracy (certainly within 10 meters), which is incredibly handy when you are in an unfamilar city. I believe that it is possible to use this as an effective navigation device for cars (although I have not tested this).
The interface is clean and I have not had a single problem with crashes or freezes. I also particularly like the keyboard feature (takes a bit of getting used to but is great!), and the way text messages are displayed in speech bubbles (allowing you to easily follow text conversations).
Now for the review of the actual phone calls - after all, the iphone is a phone! You would be forgiven for forgetting that however considering all of the extra features it has. The quality of phone calls is great, you can alter the volume, use loud speak, and continue to use other features on your phone while you are in a phonecall. The one thing I would mention here is that if you have a silicone/rubber sleeve on your phone to protect it, it can muffle the mic a bit and make it hard for people to hear you on loudspeak (mine is a cheap sleeve and this may not happen with the posh, official one!)
All in all, I would totally recommend this phone, although it may be worth waiting until prices drop! I never thought we would see the day when the internet on mobiles would take off but I really think that the iphone is bringing us closer to that day.
