Advantages: Simplicity, styling, functionality, size, features
Disadvantages: Expensive, slow mobile interent
I could save you the details and summarise this phone in one word: brilliant. However, there is one crucial detail that is incorrect in my first sentence: the iphone is not just a phone. And this is where we get to the heart of the device.
A few years ago this little device is what we all wanted: an ipod, phone, PDA, camera, etc... all in one device. Before, and after, its release the media have named it the best device ever. Some have rejected the device and some have welcomed it with open arms. either way i think it is the best phone that i have ever had.
As a phone, the iphone is about average. It has nothing particularly special, nor does it lack anything essential. To make a call just tap the phone icon; enter the number and press call. If not, just tap the contacts icon and then your contact. Done. A call is as it is on every other phone, and that is exactly how it should be.
Text messaging is slightly more interesting, and i think, the best system on any phone that i have seen. Those who use instant messaging applications, particularly ichat, will feel right at home. You just click on the SMS icon; click the new button; select your contact and then type and send your message. When you get a reply it will appear below the old message in the same window making referencing extremely easy.
Those who have seen the iphone will note that there is no physical keyboard. That is because the keyboard is on-screen. Now at this point i would usually turn down the phone and have another, but the iphone is quite unique. The on-screen keyboard actually works! And i mean properly, you could easily type out emails, notes and text messages with ease on the iphone. Sure, you make the odd mistake, but other than that: it is a joy to use.
Like me, a lot of iphone users will buy it as a PDA, as well as a phone. If, also like me, you use ical, you will feel comfortable using the iphone's brilliant calender application. Appointments are added within a few seconds and , should you subscribe to apple's Mobile-Me service, can be "pushed" to the "cloud" for your other computers to download and keep everything up to date. You can set recurrences, reminders; you can also group certain types of appointments and denote the groups via colours making identification of a work meeting and trip to the zoo easy.
The best thing about the iphone, is the simplicity of the device. Even the most technophobic technophobe will be able to quickly make their way around the device's menus and access what they need. Changing settings; entering contacts; calender appointments; tasks; emails; notes or anything is simple, easy and fast.
Honestly, as a phone, PDA, ipod or mobile browser, you will not be disappointed.
