I bought this phone for an elderly family member who was in hospital at the time and hadn't previously owned a mobile phone. It was very easy to set up, the keypad has large keys which make's using the device very simple. The built in SOS came in most handy as my number was saved for this function and anytime the user needed me all he had to do was hold down the special key. No confusion at all in teaching the family member how to use & it also comes with a manual which is like gold dust these days! Very happy indeed with this purchase, simplicity at its best with no confusing extras!
Anyone who has read my previous reviews will wonder why someone who had a galaxy S3 downgraded to a Doro - well quite simply I didn't. I made my Dad upgrade from his old school brick effect Nokia. Not that he had much of a choice as it was my birthday present to him. It's so much more than a phone it's brought him into the 21st Century. And, not that I'm tight but at only £49 in most shops very cheap too.
This phone is perfect! First of all, it has very large key pad buttons. My dad is 68, his eyesight is not the best (despite his protestations) and he gets confused easily so none of this touch screen business for him. There are no complicated additional buttons on the key pad, simply 10 numbers, a # key a * key, a green phone key for answer, a red phone key for hanging up, one up and one down button for scrolling, an A, B and C key for a inputted speed dials, a message key and a menu key and a cancel key. It sounds a lot on here but it isn't really. He can't go wrong - though he tries.
My next favorite feature is the giant screen which is approximately 2" - almost as big as some of the new smart phones currently out. This combined with the extra large font, and bright back light really eliminates his old excuse of "I didn't return your call/text as I didn't even see that you called/text as I can't see the screen". The few menus that are on the phone, should he decide to be adventurous and have a look instead of asking me, are very simple and easy to navigate. These include the usual phone book which can hold 300 numbers (he has 10 in there so far....) a clock with alarm feature, messaging, call logs, and various settings.
The phone has a good speaker on it, and a good selection of ringtones - although some are louder than others. Set on maximum volume complete with vibrating alert, it is impossible for him not to hear / feel it - and again another excuse not to answer the phone is destroyed. I believe the phone to be M3/T4 hearing aid compatible though we're not at that stage of deafness yet - his is just selective hearing
There is the option to text, and amazingly enough he has been able to open and read messages. So far I have even had two replies, the first was a pilot error that simply said "NH" which had me very worried - but seconds later another text came in that had real words. I have never been prouder. It is very easy to get to the text menu, and can be done with one button - a special message button on the key pad. One thing I did do though was to switch of the predictive text function as I find that I struggle with it let alone someone who doesn't text.
My dad likes the phone as it's a flip phone, so the screen is already protected. It's not an overly big phone but at 22mm deep, 100mm length and 52mm wide it's not very small either, but it fits nicely in your hand (and my dad's trouser pocket), this is helped by the rounded edged design. Again it's a "Goldilocks Special" when it comes to the weight too, as it's not too heavy to carry around, or too small to lose, at approximately 100g its "just right".
As it's not a high user phone the battery life on it does last an incredible amount of time, and I am talking weeks here not just days. Granted it's not used very often but I only have to look at my S3 for the battery to deplete. I also like the fact that it has a cradle so all he has to do is sit the phone in it to charge - no messing around with cables
It also has an emergency button on the back but I have told him not to test this, so can't really comment on this function - though I do think it's a brilliant idea.
This phone is perfect for someone who just wants a phone with no add-ons or mod-cons. It is incredibly easy to use and very user friendly. basically it's idiot proof - well it must be if my dad can use it!
