Apple iPhone 4 8GB
Advantages: music/data/contacts/messa ges all in one place
Disadvantages: rubbish battery life
The Iphone craze has been going for several years now, I recall when the first ever Iphone came out there was a scramble to buy it, one of my friends had it and really rated it. I at the time was on a blackberry and liked it very much. I came to upgrade my phone in May last year, I had a Blackberry and I used an IPod for my music and had it connected to my home Wi-Fi but I was fed up of carrying 2 devices around so decided to get the illusive Iphone. At that point the most recent one was the 4S but I would have had to pay extra to have it so I opted for the 4 model in white 8gb and excitedly awaited it arrival!
The 4 model is now just over 3 years old, it was released in June 2010 but this didn't put me off, the 4s so I was told was not much different but a lot more expensive. I paid no up front cost and its £42 per month unlimited calls/texts and 2GB of data to use each month (I paid £10 extra for the additional 1GB otherwise it would have cost £32 per month) the contract will last for 2 years. This is available on most contracts between £30/£40 per month and ranges from 18 to 24 months, to have it on 12 months would cost more. This is also available to buy on its own and have as PAYG, price is around £200 currently for a new one, less if used, CEX do a wide range of these.
The white version of the 4 was "newer" in the sense that it wasn't available until much later on after the initial 4 came out and so for those who got the 4 model when it was first came out probably had the black only to choose from and having the white one was a novelty. I actually preferred the white one and was glad I could choose to have it instead.
The package came. very small compared to previous phone boxes, but on opening it everything was in this little box, phone, charger and headphones. I was ready to begin!
Using the Iphone 4
I stuck this on charge straight away and did all the initial set up with Icloud and ITunes to allow me to get all my contacts in. This was quick and easy and took hardly any time at all. So now you are left with a blank canvas and its up to you to fill it! First I downloaded facebook and got all that set up, then Google as prefer to use that over safari searching and then I set up my email.
Its all quite easy to use, to send a message head to the message box which green with a speech bubble in white, you can do various setting changes, I have it so it offers spell check, although its quite amusing to see its suggested word if you spell something wrong! Calling is green with a white phone, again all very easy, your voicemails are also kept in this and does not require you to ring up to listen, actually it makes it easier because it doesn't delete them unless you want it to and you can skip through them and cherry pick ones you want to listen to. You add your contacts in the phone section, this can be mobiles, home numbers, email addresses etc.
To get Facebook and other apps head to the app store, here you can search for the apps you want or look through the top ten. It also shows you price of that app, if there is a charge, things like Google, Facebook, Sky news etc are free but gaming apps tend to be about 69p so not a massive cost. Apps, there is an app for everything! cooking, gaming, shopping, sat navs, you name it the chances are there's an app for it, all at varying costs. Its easy to download and if you use Wi-Fi takes next to no time at all and can be used once downloaded. Some apps are better than others so read reviews before buying.
ITunes is your access to music, videos and other media, although you can get it by other means using a laptop this is the easiest way to get it straight into your account and on your phone. You can look through the charts or search for a particular song, you can also download films to watch and music videos. Its important to note that extensive as the Apple catalogue is you might find some older less well known songs missing but overall it does have a huge majority of mainstream music to download. Singles usually cost about 99p, albums for a particular artist are around £9.99 or £12.99 for a compilation such as NOW 85, again prices do vary and sometimes will be on offer so its good to check regularly as you can get albums for as little as £4.99. Now the one thing I really dislike about my phone is the lack of storage, this is totally my fault I thought 8GB would be enough but apparently not so if you like lots of music get a 16 or 32 GB size as my phone can only really hold about 6 albums and afew singles. When I upgrade the one thing I will get is more storage.
Security on this phone is very good, if you add a passcode it protects your phone from being used by strangers, or even worse your friends to access your personal files. facebook etc. I change my code about once every 2/3 months but you don't need to do this I just think it makes it safer for me. If you lose your phone your details cannot be broken into, but make sure that your phone is connected to your PC before to allow it to sync to this PC, in the event of you forgetting your pin, you van reconnect it to this PC and reset it, when its stolen the Iphone wont recognise a different laptop and so will reset itself to the original factory settings and thus deleting your details off it.
The one thing that does really let the phone down is battery life and the charger, now my old blackberry got charged 2/3 times per week, the Iphone 4, as is the case with all Iphones is that unless you don't use it at all will need to be charged at least once a day, more if like me you use it to text and roam the internet. The charger itself doesn't last very long, mine had broken within 3 months of use and so I bulk brought 4 online as the cheap ones, good as they are don't last much longer. I charge my phone at my desk and at home during high use, I could get away with once but that depends on how much I use it.
I could spend hours talking about this phone! Overall I do like it, its great to have all my music/facebook/messages etc all on one device. Its great being able to look at things online whilst out and about, the Iphone 4 is good for this. Be mindful about the storage, 8GB is not a massive amount for a music lover but the Iphone 4 as a whole is a great phone to have.
Summary: really good phone
