We looked long and hard before we settled with NEC for our purchase of 30 midi-tower Units (NEC Direction 1000A). Our specification for a machine was pretty much the same as for the average home user, as we had grown tired of inadequate so called Office Workstation machines which too often seem to be an excuse to dispose of old technology at inflated prices. We stipulated the same criteria to a number of suppliers, including names like Tiny, Dell and Compaq : Midi Tower case 1 GB AMD Athlon Processor Geforce MX 32MB Graphics CD ROM 3 Com 905B NIC Speakers, Keyboard and Mouse. Windows 2000/NT pre-loaded. The only firm which seemed able to meet out needs without flinching, and furthermore to properly understand what we were talking about, was NEC. The main problem we came up against with other potential suppliers was lack of flexibility. If they had a workstation range with NT or Windows 2000 preinstalled, they did not want to have to do something extreme, like putting in a Geforce MX card and Multimedia, or vice versa, putting NT software and a network card into their multimedia range of machinery. Other things good about NEC and the NEC Direction are: The Software package is good: Works, Money, Route Europe, MS Flight Sim 98 Win98/ME/2000 or NT and to top it all the full version of MS Word 2000. Cases are solid, stylish and easily accessible for upgrades etc Warranty – full one years parts and labour. Three years if you want to pay. Sales staff are infinitely courteous and quick to answer the phone Ditto the Service staff – we have not had one duff unit yet but I called them just to test them out. Even the basic peripherals like keyboard/Mice and speakers are of a reasonable quality and need not be upgraded in a hurry. NEC is a part of Mitsubishi and is a big multinational corporation. At the moment though they
seem to have started to produce some very high quality kit aimed at the home multimedia user in addition to Business Users which are presumably its more familiar territory. As a result of the quality of service and equipment (at the right price level) that we received from their UK Offices (sales are based in Scotland) we also purchased a number of Servers and Laptop Units all of which have been highly satisfactory. I wish to commend NEC (at the moment) to business and home users alike and would have no hesitation buying from them again.
