Nokia 3220
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I had looked around at phones and decided that I liked 3220 due to the design and the ease of buttons as well as the fun flashing lights!!
Obviously the phone is no longer considered to be high spec so this review is from when I purchased it two years ago-ish. Whilst it has now significantly reduced in price, I can still say that it has been one of my favourite and most robust phones that I have owned!
This phone has loads of functions which are practical for the day to day use of the phone which I will explain later but it is also a bit of a fun phone as it has flashing rubber grips which light up in colour and flash in rhythm with the ring tone which is great for helping you find the phone in your bag! The phone can easily be personalised with cut-out covers and themes and there is also a range of Xpress-on covers available. My phone came with a Xpress-on cover which enables you to create a light up message in the air when you wave the phone from side to side which is great fun! The phone also has a build in camera and can record clips of film and sound.
My phone was brought on T-mobile pay as you go for £89.99 at the link however now it is around £30!! scary!! The phone came in your standard nokia box with a spare front and back cover, a good detailed user guide, various T-mobile documentation and a stencil which enables you to cut out your own designs or photos to put in the back cover of the phone. There were also two holographic templates to put in the back of the phone.
The Keypad and Layout
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
One thing that attracted me about this phone is the nice layout of the keypad. Many modern phones tend to have buttons which are either too small or strangely laid out so that they are difficult to use but this phone has a really nice layout and makes it easy to type text messages quickly. The button to turn the phone on is on the top of the phone in the same style as most nokia phones and under the screen of the phone there are two selection keys with a four way scroll key which works like a little joystick but it really easy to use. There is a button to dial and answer a call and a button to end a call. The rest of the buttons are your normal number buttons, which can be used in text messaging for text.
On the bottom of the phone there is the charger connector and the pop-port connector, which can be used to connect to a headset or data cable. The camera lens is on the back of the phone and there is also a loudspeaker on the side of the phone.

Call Functions
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Obviously the phone can be used for making and receiving phone calls, but it also has a built in loud speaker which you can activate during a phone call which is great if you want someone else to hear the conversation of to talk to the caller. The buttons to answer, make, end of reject a call are very easy to use and the screen indicates which buttons do which so phone calls are nice and easy to make or receive.
Text Messaging
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
You can use the phone to write text messages; predictive text is available but can be turned off if you don't like using it. Predictive text is available for a wide range of languages. The 'Messages' menu is very clear and easy to use and includes options for reading, creating and sending messages. When writing a text message there is the option to insert a contact, number, picture, smiley, word, symbol or to use a template. As the buttons are well laid out and a decent size, writing text messages is incredibly easy.

Menu Functions
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
There are several menu options and each of these leads to more options. It is intuitively laid out so is not difficult to use. The messages menu contains the options to view or write messages, email, change message settings, instant message, delete messages, change message settings and various other message functions.
The call register menu allows you to view, missed, received and dialled calls as well as view call durations.
The contacts menu allows you to search, add, delete and copy contacts, as well as various other settings such as creating caller groups.
The settings menu allows you to set up the different profiles, adjust the ring tones, light settings, shortcuts, display settings, time and date settings, call and phone settings, security and various other settings.
The gallery menu is where your images, video clips, themes, graphics, tones and recordings are kept. These are all nicely arranged in folders.
In the media menu you can use the camera and the voice recorder, each of these has their own settings, which can be adjusted.
There is then an organiser menu where the alarm clock can be set, the calendar can be used and to-do lists and notes can be written.
The applications menu is where the games can be found! There are 6 games, which come with the phone, but more java games can be downloaded. The games aren't anything spectacular but are something to waste time when you are bored! In the applications menu there is also an 'extras' menu which is where the calculator, countdown timer and stopwatch are found. The final menus are where you can connect to the internet and adjust the various settings for connections.
All in all the menus are nice and easy to navigate around and very well set out which makes the phone intuitive to use.
Connecting to a PC
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Data cables are sold in many phone shops or on the internet and you can use them to connect your phone to your computer which enables you to move pictures and video clips on and off of your phone as well as create back ups of your contacts and settings.

The Camera
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
One of the things I love about this phone is the built in camera and video recorder. There are so many times where you see something funny and just wish you had a camera on you, so its great to be able to use my phone to take random pictures. I was impressed by the quality of the pictures the phone takes as they are very clear JPEG pictures. The video clips are recorded in 3GP format. There is a 'night mode' which is great for taking photos is the light is dim and there is also a self timer. The photos or film clips can later be sent as messages to contacts. Photos can later on be edited using various clip art which is fun and they can also be used as backgrounds on your phone or transferred to a computer. The voice recorder allows you to record pieces of speech, sound or an active call for up to 3 minutes. The camera and video recorder are obviously no where near the quality of phones that you can get now but they are certainly adequate.
Overall
~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I absolutely love this phone!! It is really easy to use but has lots of fun functions. I love the rubber flashing grips as before I was always unable to find my phone in my bag when it rang but with this phone I cant miss it! The buttons are easy to use and it is simple to navigate around the various menus. The wave message application is fun and something different and the camera functions are brilliant. The only real thing I would criticise is the games as they are almost too high tech! I was quite happy with the old nokia games like snake which were basic but the games on this phone are more like computer games!! The colour screen is very clear and there are various cute backgrounds and screen savers which can be used. There is a wide selection of ring tones available but using the data cable you can put new ones on the phone. The inbox is good as it lets you store lots of messages and also shows you how much space you have used and how much is left. At 10cm x 5cm x 1.8cm and around 85g the phone is a nice small size and pretty light. The phone feels pretty robust although I do worry about the camera lens getting scratched. The battery time seems to be good and I only need to charge my phone about once a week despite using it everyday.
All in all this is definitely a fun but practical phone and I totally recommend it.
Summary: a robust and fun phone which is now very cheap!

logberg - 18.07.08 My old faithful Nokia is on the outer... it only holds battery for a day or two But I am bewildered with choice when I think of replacing it.... like the sound of your review phone ... may be the one for me... |
