Mobile Phones are an integral part of today's society. Every where you go, every time you turn around, you're bound to see someone talking on their mobile. Whether its to cancel their credit card, tell their mother that they'll be home for tea late or to order some more mango chutney, they're everywhere. Ranging from the large cumbersome 80's phones that were shaped like, and where as big as, bricks (and required some sort of chauffer to wheel around the battery) to the modern day thimble sized WAP/camera/polyphonic stuff. Where does the Nokia 3310 come in today's society? Half-way I reckon.

I came across my mobile phone by chance. Uncles who get offered free phones with no use for them come in handy from time to time, especially as I was looking for a new one at the time and the one I've got now is multi-network. I currently run on a network called O2, which suit me for all my needs.

For those of you who haven't joined the mobile phone revolution yet, here's what you're missing:

Forgotten to tell your loved one to tape the game, and already going down to the pub to watch it? Phone her on your mobile and its sorted. Unless she's found the milkman. Want to leave a quick non-verbal message? Text a short 160 letter message to someone. Bored on the train, no book to read? Enthral yourself in a game of Snake or Bantumi. There's a game for everyone, from challenging the quick to the thoughtful. Your mobile is a statement - it separates you from the monkeys.

The Nokia 3310 allows for adjustable covers, so colour it with your favourite football team, or fluffy pink, depending which way you go. Its easy to use pad is small, user-friendly and comes in metallic looking plastic or just plastic. The volume can range from silent, to conference annoying, and it comes with a vibrate option. Storing 7 customisable ringtones and 35 build in ones you can put your gramophone on e-bay. Its medium
sized, medium capability, medium battery life, monophonic ringtones, allows simple picture messaging and if snake II isn't enough, then your simple too picky. Now for the formalities:

The Menu System:

-Phone Book: Where you can keep numbers of people you call/text, add numbers, assign ring tones to certain numbers and create your own voice tags. Voice tags are when you say the name of someone you want to call into your phone and then calls them. The number of numbers you can store depends on your sim card.
-Messages: Menu to write, send and receive text messages as well as simple picture messages. All picture messages can be used as screensavers, incidentally.
-Chat: Erm, some sort of function that allows you to talk to more than one person at once, maybe? I don't really know as I've never used it.
-Call Register: Keeps info on who you last called, whose call you last missed and who last phoned you as well as the lengths of calls.
-Tones: The jingly-jangly part of the phone. Customize your ringtone to a particular pop song or change the ringing volume or text choon.
-Settings: Call Settings, Phone Settings, Security and stuff.
-Call Divert: Don't want anyone to ring you? Or direct to your voicemail if you cant answer? Here's the place to be.
-Games: Enjoy a healthy bout between your mind, the phone and your fingers. Games included with the 3310 are Snake II (a game where your a moving snake and you have to eat various stuff), Bantumi (for the intellectuals, but if you know the way its pretty easy), Space Impact (Remember the Sinclair ZX80 or the Commodore 64? Space games will never be the same...) and Pairs. Each game comes with varying levels of difficulty, except Space Impact. All games have a high score function.
-Calculator: 2+2=5, according to the Philosopher Geshalt (the total is greater than the sum of its parts or something...?)
-Reminders: Can't remember the anniversary? Just
forgotten a birthday? Up to ten stored reminders will tell you what you have to do when you have to do it!
-Clock: And on the third stroke, the time will be...
-Profiles: Easy to edit screen and volume settings. Customise a silent, vibrate and loud mode here to be able to transition from one to the other with ease.
-My Services: Member of a network? Then access your networks hot extra features.

Well, it didn't cost me anything. Its a good phone, about 7/8 the height of a Nokia 3210, my old phone. Its not a world beater by way of speed or technology, but its a good phone for those who just like to talk. Verdict: 75%

Advantages:

Wont Let You Down
Cheap, Easy to use
Everyone knows where to get spare parts

Disadvantages:

Not the MOST advanced
Everyone either has or has had this phone or its brothers the 3210 and the 3510
No WAP
My sim card only stores a total of 10 text messages
