Advantages: A well built handset with a long standby life and changeable covers.
Disadvantages: Lack of features in comparison to other products on the market today.
Recently I was rummaging in my loft and I come across a box which was literally full of old mobile handsets, some of which were a complete waste of space and some which were possibly suitable to be recycled for pennys on the likes of mazuma or something similar.
However one of the handsets i came across was a nokia 3410, and due to it been dual band I was able to use it for my contract sim on Virgin as I had broke my previous handset.
I remember when the handset was first released and like most technological gadgets it was the next step up in technology and the must have phone at the time, I remember it as been one of the early handsets which actually had a vibration function for calls and texts.. oh how we was so easily pleased!!
Then there was the classic nokia games like Snake which was then upgraded to Snake II on the 3410 and also space impact which was another huge time killer on the bus or in the back of the car, and then nokia began to introduce screensavers, downloads and the first instance of mobile internet with the 2g wap browser.
The original cover for the 3410 comes in a turquoise blue which isn't to attractive to be quite honest but again the big advantage for many nokia's is the changeable covers which can quickly be replaced for an alternative more suited design.
In terms of what the actual device does the answer is not a great deal! In comparison to today's technology which is featured across a range of models of new handsets you might even question why any one would even bother with a phone which now seems so unattractive!
The 3410 is rather heavy at 114 grams including the battery its also bulky so take up the majority of space in your pocket where as you could say get 2x nokia 8310s in the same space.
It has a major lack of features when you consider that with an I-phone or Blackberry we can surf the web, check e-mails, download sophisticated apps to suit our lifestyle. Experience high quality imaging and video recording where as the 3410 doesn't even have a camera! However the capability is there for the option to download small java games, ringtones, screensavers etc.
But there is an upside to such a handset, one being because it is so rugged and well built it can take a considerable amount of damage from droppages. Also having such a large battery when the phone actually turns off when its empty it seems like there is a form of reserve power left as it will continue to powerup several times and still make phone calls or send a text in the duration it stays on for.
It also has an incredible standby time of between 55-260 hours, however a not so impressive battery life when using the phone as you would only get 2-4 hours before been completely empty!
Summary: Useful as a cheap handset for work or just a phone that you don't need to worry to much about losing
