*** Nokia 6030 Phone ***

The Nokia 6030 is the mobile phone we currently use at work, so while sitting on a dinner break I have decided to review it.

The Nokia 6030 is back to the basics of a phone, it is silver in colour, it has a colour screen and is just over 1cm thick. There is no camera or hidden gadgets to this phone, it is as simple as calls and texts, a pretty basic menu and one game... hmmm maybe this is why my boss chose it so we wouldn't be playing with the camera all day!

The phone starts up quite quick with a few little tunes along the way. After start up you can access the menu after approx 5-10 seconds. The menu is accessed with ease by the touch of one button and consists of the following:

* Messaging - The section for send text messages only, due to the phone having no camera Multi-media messages cannot be sent, however they can be received as I have sent pictures from my phone to it just so we could have a better screensaver! The texts are easy to type and there is the option of predictive text if you prefer, again predictive text is easy to use on this phone.

* Call Register - In here you will find lists of all your missed, Dialled and Received calls and also the option to clear the lists if you want to.

* Contacts - This is the area where all of your names and numbers are stored. There is a small sub menu offering Names, Settings, Caller Groups, Speed Dials and Delete all. All of these categories are easy to get into and use. Delete all is a permanent thing and you will not be able to retrieve numbers once deleted as I accidentally did while messing with the phone in the early days of having it.

* Settings - This is the area to go to if you wanted to change any settings for your profiles, themes, tones, personal shortcuts, display, time & date, security and the list continues. Again easy to navigate around and simple to use.

* Gallery - In the gallery you will find the folders for your themes, tones, graphics and any received files. I find this simple to use and there is a wide variety of polyphonic ringtones, but as with all included ringtones there are only about 2 or 3 that are decent enough to use without either dying of embarrassment when the phone rings or the tone driving you insane! The ringtones are all polyphonic; mp3 files are not compatible with this phone as I have tried sending them from my phone in search of finding a better ringtone.

* Radio - Simply as it sounds, this is a radio! The radio can only be used when headphones are attached. I haven't used the radio as I don't have any headphones for the phone, so I can't comment on this feature.

* Organiser - In the organiser you will find just 3 items, an alarm, a calendar and a calculator. The alarm is reasonably loud and is set each morning to go off at about 5:25pm (home time is 5:30pm!) and so far it has not let us down. The calendar is a feature we haven't really used apart from to work out what day payday falls on! The calculator is probably the most used in this section as we are always loosing the big calculator; it is a basic one and can be picked up easily in a few attempts.

* Applications - In applications there is two folders, games and collection. In the games folder there is one Nature Park game which is actually quite addictive and very similar to the Sega classic Columns. It can be tricky to get the hang of the buttons; however it has managed to fill many a quiet moment. In the collection folder there is one item - Converter, I have tried to use this item but failed, it is for converting currency and measures, I have tried to use it however I just don't understand how it works.

* Web - This is the section of your phone where you can connect to the net, I have only tried this feature once, due to the fact that my boss checks the bills and I thought we might get charged loads! When I did try it, it was easy to use, however the pages did take a ridiculous amount of time to load so I literally only looked at about 2 or 3 pages before getting bored and turning it off.

* Orange Plus - This section is where you can find the info about contacting your network provider, in this case Orange and there is a link to call Orange direct, which I would think is much more useful than searching for a contact number as I have done on previous occasions.

*** Battery Life ***

The battery life of the 6030 is excellent, we use it everyday for calls, usually about 20+ calls lasting between 30 seconds and 5 minutes and we only really have to charge every 4th day, this includes the phone being left on overnight as well.

*** Call Quality ***

The call quality is quite good, however on occasion I have experienced an echo of myself which is very distracting. The volume during a call is great, I can hear the other person without having to leave the room, which is a major factor as I work in a noisy environment of a printing unit. Also on the noise factor, the ringtones on the phone are very loud and can be heard easily above the machines.

*** Problems ***

I have been using this phone for about 18 months and so far the only problem I have encountered is the ringtones suddenly disappearing on me and instead of the usual music I get a single beep, this was easily sorted by turning the phone off then back on again.

*** Overall ***

Overall I would say this is a good phone that is serving its purpose well in the workplace, this phone meets my needs, it is a basic phone that is beyond easy to use. I would recommend this phone for the purpose I am using it for; a basic work phone, however I wouldn't have it for my personal phone due to lack of camera and features such as Bluetooth and music players, I love my gadgets!

Really nicely done review, but again, I'm not sure we need all that detail on each of the menu items. One thing I am also wondering about is the keys here - from the picture, they look quite strange in shape and I wonder how good/bad that is for dialing and texting.
