Advantages: Many customisable features.
Disadvantages: Not the most up-to-date phone around.
Of all the mobile 'phones I've used up 'til now, the 6110 has to be the best and the one I've used for the last year or so. I bought it second-hand after a very quick glimpse of a friend's 'green' one who raved about it. When I first saw the one I was buying I thought, "OK, this one's purple but I can live with it." It turned out that the 6110 is both green & purple; a kind of pearlescent colour that changes depending on the way you look at it. A fairly light 'phone, the 6110 sits comfortably in the hand and the keys, although a bit small, are well spaced and deliver a noticable click when pressed. The display is clear and easily read and the menu based software is easy to use. Sound quality is good but I suppose that depends on the network too. Battery life is more than adequate although it can take 4 hrs to fully charge from empty; not the fastest. The 6110 is a single-band 'phone which basically means that it won't work on all the networks; in the UK the it'll work with BTCellnet & Vodafone. A 'phone that tells me who's calling just by ringing has to be good. The 6110 has a feature where you can set stored numbers to one of 5 customisable Caller Groups. Then you can pick a different ringtone (from the 35 available) for each group and when the 'phone rings, you roughly know who it is and whether or not to even pick it up to answer it! This does require that the caller doesn't withhold their number, right enough. There's a different wee picture associated with each group which flashes up too. It also has a thing called Profiles where you can quickly change things for different situations. E.g. If you're in a more noisy environment, you can set it to 'Loud' or if it's connected to a car kit or a handsfree kit, you can set it to 'Car' or 'Headset' to allow it to answer by itself without ringing, etc. (A vibrating battery can be obtained as an option B
TW). Again, each of these profiles can be customised with different ringtones, keypad and alert tones, etc. The 'phone also features; besides the common GSM functions like SMS text messaging, call divert, etc some handy applications including a basic calculator with currency converter and a 100 year calendar where you can store up to (IIRC) 30 notes with an optional reminder alarm for each. The (loud & persistent) alarm clock itself has a snooze function for those wanting another few minutes in bed in the morning. Also, because of the calendar, the 6110 remembers the date of recent calls as well as the time which can be useful. The 'phone can also store 50 numbers over and above the SIM card's memory and also comes with 3 games; Memory, Snake & Logic for those moments of complete boredom. One of the best things though, is the Infra-Red port on the top. If, for example, you're still at school and you and your mate both have 6110s, you can send messages across the classroom and with the tones switched off, you'll not disturb the teacher. :) N.B. I'm not saying this won't get the 'phones confiscated if you're caught! No cheating, mind. If you have a PC with an IR port and Nokia's Data Suite software, you can add 'phone numbers, update your calender and write text messages on your computer and then send them to the 6110. Further still, with a serial cable and software, you can change the Startup graphic, the Caller group graphics, have a customised graphic instead of the network's name and set your own ringtone. Some of these can be even sent to you via text messaging (theme from Hallowe'en, anyone?). All-in-all a classic, full featured mobile with plenty of things to play with.

- 08/05/01 Nokia introduced the 61xx series on 10 November 97 with the 6110, 6130/8 and the 6190 for GSM900, 1800 and 1900 neworks respectively. The 6150 GSM900/1800 dual band phone wasn't introduced until 1 June 1998. IMO Nokia phones were better & more reliable than the competition at that time and personally I prefer reliabilty to image.
I buy Nokias but I've never owned a Mondeo. :) |

- 07/05/01 A good op. However the writer states that the 6110 is only single band. Clearly over priced and over rated. Nokia phones are bit like Ford Mondeo's, everybody buys them, but I don't really know why. |
