Advantages: Small and compact, Jam packed with features galore, Attractive and stylish
Disadvantages: Nearly everyone has one now!
For those of you that have read my review on my Nokia 6170, you will know that I had to return that phone due to a few problems I had with it (Go on...go read the review...!)
After speaking to Orange about my concerns, they offered to send me a different phone. As I am a huge Nokia fan, and I had already had some experience with this phone (my Dad has it), I decided upon the Nokia 6230. At this point, I didn't really know much about the phone.
Orange kindly arranged for it to be delivered yesterday, Sunday 15th may 2005, between 6pm and 10pm. Dead on 6pm, the phone was delivered - talk about efficient!
As I was exchanging my old phone for the new one, the phone wasn't delivered in a box - I was able to keep my old one, along with the charger and SIM card. I had to give my old phone and battery back and in exchange, they provided me with the following:
Nokia 6230
New battery (which provides up to 3-5 hours talk time and up to 150-300 hours standby time - although as I've not yet had the phone for even 24 hours, I cannot confirm this).
Hands free Kit
Instructions
Nokia 6230 Software Suite CD
32mb Memory Card
The Nokia 6230 is a small, sleek little phone. Mine is a black 'Graphite' colour but colours do vary - as a T-Mobile Customer, my father received a silver one. It has a 27.3 mm x 27.3 mm active TFT colour display. The screen is large and clear.
Key Features
• Video recorder and player
• Digital VGA camera
• Active TFT colour display
• Bluetooth wireless technology
• Streaming video and audio
• Music player for MP3 and AAC files
• Stereo FM radio
• EDGE and GPRS
• Multimedia Card (MMC)
Moving down, the graphite keypad is clear and easy to use. The keys are quite flat. The numbers on the outer sides are smaller than the keys in the middle. However, texting is quick and easy. Apart from the number keys, there are 2 Function keys - Go To and connection to GPRS Internet connection.
There is a large square button underneath the screen, which when pressed in the middle, takes you to the menu, when pressed down, takes you to your saved contacts and when pressed up, takes you to the camera function. On the back of the phone, toward the top in the camera lens.
I eagerly inserted the SIM card, then the memory card and then the battery and replaced the back cover. The phone is switched on via a silver button on the top of the phone. It took me a while to notice this, as whilst other standby buttons are clearly marked with a little sign, this one isn't.
I was so far impressed with the look, feel and appearance of the phone. I am used to the Nokia Menu, so didn't really expect much difference to the other Nokia phones I have had. I was wrong.....
**MENU**
To access the main Menu, press the large square button for the menu. You are then taken to:
**Messages**
Here, you can access your Text, Multimedia, Email, Instant and Voice messages. You are able to create, read and send messages. You are also able to access your message settings, such as your 'Sending profile'.
Come out of the Messages menu and you are then taken to:
**Call Register**
Here, you can access details of all Missed, received and dialled numbers. You can also access details of call durations, whether it is totals of calls made and received so far, or the duration of the last call you made.
Come out of the Call Register menu and you are then taken to:
**Contacts**
Here you can search for contacts you already have in your phone, add new contacts, delete and edit existing contacts, copy contacts from SIM card to phone or from Phone to SIM card, edit your settings, such as Contact view, check your memory status, i.e. how many more contacts you can add, allocates speed dials and voice tags (whereby you can voice dial), access Service Numbers such as Customer Service, Traffic news, see 'My Number' (your mobile number) and set up Caller Groups, such as 'Work' and 'Family'.
Come out of the Contacts menu and you are then taken to:
**Settings**
Here you can change the settings of your phone. You can change your profile, either from general to Silent, change your ring tone and wallpaper, ringing volume, vibrating alert, message tone alert, keypad tones, warning tones and change the Profile name to your name, if you wish. You can change the colour of your display, set the date and time, add any personal shortcuts, turn on your Connectivity - this phone boasts Bluetooth, Infrared and GPRS connections - change the call settings, should you wish to divert any calls, turn on 'Any key' answer, etc. The Phone settings can be changed, such as the Phone language, turn on automatic key guard and change your Welcome Note. Here you can also access your Security settings, such as call barring. Should you wish to, you can also restore the factory settings.

This section also shows the memory card. This is additional memory. As this phone is an MP3 player, this is where I shall be storing my music files.
Come out of the Gallery menu and you are then taken to:

Here you can access your 640 x 480 VGA camera, Media Player, Music player, radio and Integrated Voice recorder and player. You can also change the settings of the camera, such as Night Vision and store radio stations.

In the 'Collection' folder, you can access the Currency Converter, Translator and World Clock. You can also download other applications here. In the 'Extras' folder, you can access the calculator, Countdown timer and Stopwatch.
Come out of the Applications menu, press down and then you are taken to:
**Web**
Here you can access the Web. You can set bookmarks, follow download links for tones, etc, check the last web address you used, check your service inbox, which holds items you have downloaded from the web, change the settings, such as connection and appearance and clear all History.
Come out of the Web menu, press down and you are then taken to:
**Orange Plus**
Obviously, if you are not with Orange, then this will probably feature as your Operators menu. Here I can call Orange and access information such as Sport, Lifestyle and Finance.
As you can see, the phone has an extensive range of features. As well as being jam-packed with all of the above, it is also relatively small, weighing just 97 g. The dimensions are 103 mm x 44 mm x 20 mm.
As I am on an Orange Contract, the phone was free to me (I pay £25 per month for 120 minutes anytime and 250 text messages), should you wish to purchase it on Pay-as-You-Go, it would cost £149.99 (as quoted by Orange). I also pay £5 per month Insurance, which has so far proved useful!
Despite only having the phone since yesterday evening, I have made and received voice calls and text messages. Voice calls are loud and clear. Should you need to adjust the volume whilst you are on a call, you can do so by using the Volume button on the left hand side of the phone.
I'm so far very impressed with the phone. What has impressed me more, however, if the fact that it also doubles as an MP3 player. Although the phone was only supplied with a 32mb Memory card, 512mb memory cards can be purchased off eBay for as little as £20.00 - much cheaper than an MP3 player! However, to be able to transfer music from your PC to the phone, if you do not have a Bluetooth enabled PC, you would need to purchase an adaptor. Again, these are around £20.00 on eBay.
I would definitely recommend this phone. However, it is very popular and I have seen loads of people with them - at least with my other Nokia, it was a little less well known.
If you want an all singing, all dancing phone, then this is definitely the one for you!
