Advantages: Large screen, keypad easy to use, series 60

Disadvantages: 3G costs are high, no camera on front of phone

I was curious about the whole 3G experience so decided to invest in a Nokia 6630 on an orange contract. Included in my contract I got a heck of a lot of free data allowance for the first 3 months and was really glad I did, as this can prove to be an expensive feature. I got a bit hooked on the celebrity news videos and downloaded quite a few things too, but when orange mistakenly charged me for the data after the first month I was horrified to find a bill for £100! Be warned, 3G is great but you really do need to watch the cost.

I didn’t actually use the video calling feature but the fact that there isn’t a phone on the front is, in my humble opinion, a bit silly. For the other person to actually see you (which, lets face it, is the whole point of video calling) you would have to stand in front of a mirror and after all, that’s not always possible. You can show people where you are standing of course which may have it’s merits!

The phone in general is pretty much as good as it gets. I love Nokia phones, especially series 60 ones, and find the menus easy to negotiate and the text system an absolute dream to use. GPRS and MMS are easy to set up and work without a hitch and there are hundreds of downloads for Nokia phones available so themes, games, videos and ringtones are never a problem to find.

Call quality was high and I never had a problem with a call being dropped. The ringtones and message tones seemed clear enough and it’s easy enough to change the profile to silent if in the cinema etc.

Maybe the size of the phone could be a bit of an issue for some, especially the ladies reading this, but it’s certainly not brick like, or out of proportion. The screen is large and impressive which in turn means that the photos taken with the 1.3 megapixel camera look great. Photos are also very easy to send through Bluetooth or mms and they do still look good on a computer (something that can’t be said for some other phones out there).

Mp3s sounded good through the phone, but much better when listed to through the included stereo earphones. With its large memory, this phone was easily capable of holding the 10 full songs I downloaded through music player, and also the games, photos and videos that I collected over the months that I owned it.

It’s also worth pointing out that the covers are changeable on this phone too. I do like a change, and was pleased to be able to get rid of the orange logo (sorry orange) on the back of my standard silver cover by purchasing a new one in brown/red. I will say though that Nokia branded products are well worth the extra money. I bought three cheaper ones but didn’t use them as they made the phone look cheap and the keypads included with them didn’t work well at all.

All in all I would highly recommend this phone to anyone looking for a good quality, well built phone capable of doing everything you could ask of it although I do think that Nokia should have included another camera for video calling.

Summary: Sturdy, good looking phone with clear bright screen but 3G costs are high
