Advantages: WAP - Modem - Storage Capacity - Design
Disadvantages: No Data suite as yet from Nokia
My first mobile phone was the size of a brick, weighed about the same, and if you were really lucky you could even use it to make and receive telephone calls! Since then I have worked my way through various networks and handsets, ending up with a brace on Nokia 7110e handsets on the Orange network. As a web site design company, we wanted to get into WAP Sites, and even though developer software is out there, there is no better way to test sites than on the actual platform for which they were written. I bought two phones, developed some WAP Sites and then discovered - much to my surprise – that this little 7110 was an amazing bit of kit – even better than the trusty NK702 in my back pocket! WAP features aside (the 7110 puts the competition in the shade) this is such a feature-packed telephone that it would be silly to try and list all the features here. The Infra Red connectivity works well, with PDA, Laptop and Desktop with an Infra red adaptor. My son uses his 7110 as a modem with his desktop as they don’t have phone lines in their bedsits! Using a standard dial-in ISP (many ISPs still have 01XXX numbers as well as 0845s) his Internet calls cost as little as 1p a minute on Everyday 50 and are free for the first 50 minutes!) The modem speed is only 9600Kbps, but this is more than fast enough for POP-3 email sending and retrieval. The 7110 holds 1000 names, addresses, telephone numbers, email addresses, all of which can be entered and synchronised on a PC using 3rd party software. On the down side, Nokia promised a “data suite” to allow PDA-style diary and address book synchronisation with your PC – Where is it? Don’t ask me, ask Nokia!

- 01/10/00 One of the better mobile phone opinions I've read. I may even update my Ericsson on the strength of this. Thanks. |
