Advantages: Feature city, Huuuuge screen, Classy
Disadvantages: Suspect slide down cover lastability, It's so last year darling
I’ve been with Dooyoo for a year now! So here’s my birthday review: I’ll quite gladly admit that I’ve got a serious geeky fetish for all things technical. I had to have a DVD player, I had to have a mobile then a WAP mobile and then another WAP mobile. Previously I was a perfectly happy owner of the C35i from Siemens but with the recent trend of downloadable ringtones and logos I just couldn’t help but want a Nokia phone. You may or may not know that the Siemens doesn’t currently support the download features. The Nokia 3330 (basically a 3310 with WAP) was my first consideration until I realised that the 7110 was still available at a cheaper price. £10 in fact, crikey (and if you’re starting a new contract you should get it for free). This for a phone that was £149.99 when it first came out last year. Two things were clear in my mind when I first saw the phone. Firstly the screen is HUGE, I mean, I thought that Page 3 model Jordan’s assets were what I would call huge but no, this screen is what I now call huge. Secondly was that slide down front a la matrix stylee. It’s not the same phone as the one featured in the film (I believe it is actually completely fictional) but the slide down front is basically the same idea. OK, so the big screen is certainly one sensible reason to buy this phone but despite the good points this phone had a lot of bad press when it was released (and in subsequent months). Some people were having problems with the slide down cover, others were having software problems. Either way the complaints were numerous and thankfully most of them have been resolved now. The slide down cover is still not as solid as it could be but unless you’re a little careless you should be fine. The Phone: It’s certainly a good looking phone with a big screen, lightweight battery and has the handy ‘navi’ roller button which can be u
sed to scroll through WAP pages and menus. It comes in a standard green colour but it has a metallic effect, which can make it appear to be red and gold at times. Features: Well, it’s got shed loads of the things!! 1.Messages – this refers to text messages of course and I have to say that I don’t actually send many of them. You have a similar system here as on an e-mail programme with folders (such as inbox, outbox etc) where all incoming and outgoing messages can be stored. Messages are easy to write using either the keys or the navi roller (to scroll through letters) and there are also templates to use (e.g. ‘I’m going to be late...). The only criticism is that the lower keys (* 0 and #) are slightly obstructed by the slide down front but it’s a minor complaint. 2.Call Register – big brother is watching you! Not really, but here you can track all of the calls you have made/received. You can check call durations, call costs and missed calls. 3. Profiles – perhaps quite sadly, this is one of my favourite features! This is where you can choose which ringtone you have, the volume, message alert settings etc. On top of that you can customise individual settings so you can have a car setting, one for the office, one for nights etc which I have found to be really useful and they can be activated very easily either through the navi roller (you have to set it up) or by pressing the on/off button and selecting. 4. Settings – Here you can modify things like the time, alarm, phone settings and call settings. Some features you may never use and others can be essential to how the phone performs for you. If you absolutely must have that ‘Hello MR.COATES’ greeting you can do it here! 5. Call Divert – speaks for itself really, you can choose to divert calls if you’re out of reach or busy etc. 6. Games – woohoo! Being the game
s assistant this of course is one of the exciting parts isn’t it?! Well, we’re not exactly talking Tekken or Sega Rally but the games are surprisingly addictive. Snake returns as Snake 2, Rotation (a letter and number puzzle), Racket – quite a good little tennis game and opposite which is basically solitaire (not the card version). They’re all great games and very handy for those boring train moments and of course they’re great on the big screen too. 7. Calculator – it’s a calculator, please tell me I don’t have to explain this one!!! 8. Calendar – don’t overlook this as a tool for the businessman, this is a really handy feature. There’s no need to forget birthdays or important dates ever again. Choose the date, choose a reminder and off you go! It’s helped me be much more popular with my family as I’m always forgetting their birthdays. 9. Infrared – ooooh! On the top of the phone there is a small remote control type plastic part that is the infrared eye. This can be used to transfer data between compatible phones and for playing two player games! Result if you ask me although I haven’t used it yet. 10. Services – this is where the guts of the WAP facility lies. You’ll have to set up the phone to work with WAP but you're network operator should be able to advise you on this. The WAP performs incredibly well and puts my old C35 to utter shame. The 7110 is faster and the screen is superb thanks to the size and for me this is one of the best features of the phone. If you’ve never tried WAP then give it a bash, it’s not all bad you know! Overall: I really like this phone. It’s got everything I need on it, is at a ridiculously low price (if you can still get one) and has more features than you can shake a stick at. You can download ringtones and logos although the cover isn’t replaceable. As alw
ays the phone comes with a manual and charger with the addition of a CD-ROM that contains useful info and some software for doing clever data type things. It’s had a lot of bad press but I love it.
