Advantages: Powerful, large screen, navi roller

Disadvantages: bulky, not completely bug free yet

I have used several phones since the early nineties and Nokia’s stand head and shoulders above the rest.

The 7110 is miniscule compared to the first brick I used to cart around with me and instead of 12hrs standby the latest offering from Nokia regularly lasts me 4 – 5 days!

Why are Nokia’s so good?

Well it’s the user interface or GUI, I’ve tried Motorola’s only to end up shouting at them and visiting the doctor for repetitive strain injury of the finger. The Nokia interface is quite simply elegant, everything you require is in a logical menu structure and with the addition of the “Navi Roller” on the latest phones my little pinkies are safe!

A large screen makes SMS and data easier than on previous models and the covered keypad (similar to the banana phone) ensures that you don’t accidentely call the police too often!

Aside from being from a good breeding heritage the 7110 is an excellent phone in its own right with a variety of useful features not available on its competitors models, this includes infa-red data links through the built in modem.

In its simplest form this allows you to connect to other phones and transfer any number from your phone book as a business card. It’s a very good idea to store your own number so you can beam it into other people’s phones (saves having to hunt for pen and paper).

But the IR link comes into its own when lined up with a Psion or Palm pilot this allows full use of email and even web surfing, be warned this can be expensive on UK networks.

The real top draw feature of the 7110 is WAP or wireless application protocol, this allows users to access specially written web data from the phone.

Now WAP has received a bit of a pasting in the media recently, the majority is undeserved and caused by the charges levied by networks for the service often 5 – 10p a minute. Using WAP
without worrying about the cost on some sort of fixed price deal say and extra £3 per month would no doubt see WAP take off.

Useful sites like the “curry pages” where you can enquire where the nearest Indian is and up to date travel info from the RAC would become indispensable.

There are ways to get unmetered WAP access but your current ISP has to have an 0800 dial up number and you need to be on Orange, sadly not practical for most, so come on networks cut us some slack!

When WAP does fly a 7110 will see you alright, but until then you will have a small light phone with built in data capability and IR transfer, as well as long standby, easy user interface, 40 ringtones and predictive SMS input.

Oh I nearly forgot to mention it looks pretty cool as well!

With contract prices for the 7110 about 70 quid and pay as you go prices about 150 quid you can't go wrong
