Advantages: Built in PDA, HSCSD, Full sized keyboard

Disadvantages: No GPRS, No Stylus Pen

The Nokia 9210 Communicator is one of the latest models of pda phone available at present.

The concept of having a Phone with the features of a handheld PDA device sounds really good but is it really worth the value in money.

Now we all know that there is much new technology break through in the mobile industry and I’ve wondered if the Nokia communicator live up to it.

Now the idea of the Nokia communicator has been out for some time from Nokia and fell quite flat on their faces.

The first one was seen in 1996 with the launch of the first one 9000. The second one that came out was in 1998 that was the model 9110i. Both of these devices were not colour so it would make it harder to view web pages when browsing. But this has been solved with the newer model as it has a colour screen.

Design
----------

The design of this phone is really well layout, having a full size keyboard has really attracted a lot of people. The folding concept has been very popular since the launch of the earlier models. It is a fairly large phone but you’ve got to take into account that it also offers PDA service as well. The phone screen is located on the outer side of the screen as we all the keys to make a call. As this key are on the outside you will always have to remember to put the keypad lock on. This is because if you have it in your pocket or even in your jacket the keys could accidentally be pressed. But the rest if the phone looks really nice and futuristic and might be popular with the business tycoons.

Features
------------

The phone has a built in PDA that has a colour screen (4096) colours. The screen is very clear and you won’t have problems looking at images,

Desk application with background image and links that is like the standard window option. So you get that computer feel. If you’re a pocket PC owner you will understand that it work like the same as wi
ndows CE.

Messaging includes SMS, Fax, and E-mail – there is a built in program that will control all of your messaging system through your pda.

The email service can support the following Email protocol POP3, IMAP4, SMTP)

Internet includes WWW and WAP- you are able to access the World Wide Web (WWW) and Wireless Application protocol. With the web it more to do with looking at information rather than downloading.

Internet HyperText Markup Language HTML

Contacts- keep a list of contact and uses them with other programs on the pda to send emails or even text to a specific telephone number. Can store a great amount of details than the phone. There is no phone memory on the phone as they have given you this option.

Calendar- as it stated the calendar option allows you to keep reminder and schedules on your pda.

Office includes Word, Spreadsheet and Presentation viewer – if someone send you an email with the following attachment then your able use a viewing program for word, spreadsheets and presentation.

Here are the follow lists of attachments that can be opened

HTM Lotus 1-2-3 v.1/2/3/4/5/97/Millenium WQ1, WKU, WK1, WK3, WK4, WK5, WK6, 123Lotus AMI Draw SDW
Microsoft Excel 2/3/4/5/7/97/98/2000 XLS, XLC
Microsoft PowerPoint 3/4/7/97/98/2000 PPT, POT, PPS
Microsoft Project MPP
Microsoft Word 1/2/3/4/5/6/7/97/98/2000 DOC

Imaging (Digital camera connectivity), Video player – you also have the option to load you digital camera picture to your mobile pda and also able to play video streaming from websites. This is a great idea but does take some time to get use to.

Formats that came be loaded

Audio File WAV, AU, WVE
CompuServe GIF
Computer Graphics Metafile CGM
Corel/Novell Presentations SHW
Bitmap MBM

The phone is also dual band so you’re able to take your phone aboard but your not able to tak
e it to America. You will need to purchase 9290 that is specifically built for that country.

You also have the flexibility of using the infra to transfer data between phones or even to your computer.

The phone also support (HSCSD) than mean that you’re able to transfer data at high speeds. But the big problem that Nokia will have is that (HSCSD) is only supported by orange so it will not be any use on other networks. The most you will be able to transfer is 9,600 KPS, which is better off buying a normal phone.

Size
------

Dimensions: 158 x 56 x 27 mm
Weight: 244 g

The phone size is fairly large and it not too bad to carry around. You will have to remember
that it does have a built in PDA so the weight is going to be heavier than standard phones. But for what the phone can do I’ll bet you anytime that you will be able to put up with it.

Battery life
--------------

Now I will always recommend you to carry an extra battery for this device as it can consume a large amount of power when using the PDA constantly or even on the net. I’ll guess we will need to wait a bit longer for a decent life of a battery!

Talk/Data/Fax time - 4-10hours
Standby, phone on - up to 400hours
Standby, phone off - up to 400hours
Charging time – 2 and half hours

Standard Stuff
--------------------

You’ll get a lot of the standard feature such as

Call register – catch up with you missed calls, received call, made call to see if anyone used your phone.

Ringtones – you can download from the Internet or over the phone personalised ringers for your phone. You’re allowed to store up to 7 ring tones.

Predictive text - An easy way to write your text messages out. What it does it suggests words for you, which you then pick.

Overall
----------

I did re
ally expect a lot from this phone as it been people have been waiting for this for dome time. The entire PDA features are really great and I believe that this phone will do very well with business users or technology freaks. I would not recommend for the normal daily customer to buy this unless you have full value of the services offered.

There are quite a few downfalls on the design as well which are no GPRS service and no stylus touch screen pen. The GPRS is an up coming data media, which will be supported by all networks and should have been included in the design of this phone. This means that there will be another updated version of this phone to come out.

The stylus pen is a standard feature on most PDA, which has a great benefit of freedom to do a lot more. They should think about doing this as it may put people off from buying one.

Price
--------

I’m sorry to say that this phone is over price and that you should wait for it to go down. Current the asking price with connection is 500 pounds and if you would like a off line one then your looking around up to a 1000 pounds.

It so stupid to sell such a phone at such a high price but I guess they have to make their money some how.

I would suggest to wait a bit longer for a newer model then you’ll won’t be wasting your money

Important
-------------

Since the launch of this phone there has been quite a few problem occurred so please make sure you check the software version of the phone by pressing *#0000# to see if you have the latest version.

I’ve listed the entire version for you and remember that you can go to a Nokia service centre to get your version updated

(CURRENTLY THERE ARE NO VERSION AVALIABLE AT THE MOMENT)

WILL UPDATE WHEN AVALIABLE!

Great op. I'm not sure I'd carry it around with me, as my phone and PDA are nowhere near as big as this, plus I don't take my PDA with me as much as my phone. And you say in the first line that it is one of the latest phones, yet I have seen this one around for well over a year! Maybe I've seen a similar model before, but if I have they look very similar.
