Advantages: Too many to list - everything about this

Disadvantages: Shame about no high speed internet capability

I was coming up to the end of my contract and was definitely in the market to buy a smartphone but was baffled by the choice. The obvious choice seemed the iPhone but as you might know I'm not the keenest person on Apple. So the other choices remaining were the Blackberry Curve, the Nokia E71, the Sony Xperia X1 and the E63.

So why did I choose the E63? Well for one is a sexy looking phone. When I first opened the box I was amazed at how slim and small it was - keep it your pocket and you hardly feel it which is a huge plus for me. But it's not just a pretty face. First thing to notice is the full QWERTY keyboard which though it looks very small at first, I got used to it very quickly and now typing is so simple. Use that in coordination with the predictive text function and you're flying!

The next thing I love is the actual functions. For me a big thing was being able to access my emails on the go as well as some sneaky Facebook surfing. The internet speed is good enough and whilst not as fast as the iPhone or the E71 (which have high-speed HSPDA connections) it easily does the job. Also you can attach your personal mail account to the phone and receive notifications as soon as you get a mail which is just amazing. You can set it to update up to every 5 minutes though this is a bit of a drain on the battery.

So battery life - well it's not bad considering the amount of power you get with this Symbian platform. I normally make about 30mins of calls a day, send 10-15 text and have the mail retrieval set to every 5 mins. The battery lasts a good 2 to 3 days.

The E63 also has a powerful suite of applications including a word processor, spreadsheet and PDF reader. Again - very useful when you least expect it.

So why not go for the E71 then you ask? The main reason is that the E71 is made of metal and gets those horrible smudge marks over it very quickly which either makes it look pretty grimey or you end up polishing it on your chest every 10 seconds. Also being metal makes it a bit too sleek and hard to hold in one hand without worrying it will fall. The E63 is made out of plastic but everyone who's seen it so far in my office and home wants one and loves the way it looks, feels and works.

I really recommend this product as I have hardly anything bad to say about it - would have been nice with some high speed internet but far from being a dealbreaker!
