Advantages: Well built, stuffed with features and games and apps
Disadvantages: Expensive and perhaps too many buttons
Soon as you open the box for the Nokia N85, you know you're onto something good.
Unwrapping the phone is a delight as you see just how well built and stylish the phone is. With a glossy finger-print friendly fascia, the wonderful OLED screen shines bright, it really looks as if Nokia have put some effort into the phone.
It's a feature packed phone with an excellent 5MP camera with flash, 8GB memory card, Bluetooth, A-GPS, WiFi, accelerometer (we'll come to this later) and a touch sensitive square that Nokia have dubbed as a naviwheel.
If you're after a responsive phone that doesn't take forever to switch applications then this will be down your alley. Slide the phone upwards reveals the keyboard - and it feels sturdy. Slide it down to reveal Media Player shortcut buttons which any music-savvy fan will appreciate.
The button in the bottom left hand corner of the form functions as the Menu option and the square "Navi-wheel" is used to navigate the menu. Luckily, my phone came with the touch sensitiveness of the naviwheel which off and that's exactly how I would recommend it to be as it's overly sensitive and serves little purpose in it's current form.
I mentioned the accelerometer earlier, and this is Nokia's little bash at both the iPhone, the PSP and it's ill-fated N-Gage gaming device. The phone comes loaded with EA Games and some make sue of the accelerometer and I'm sure more will be developed for the device.
Overall, this phone is trying to meet the challenges Nokia face by showing it can build a well-rounded, well sized, well built phone packed to the rafters with applications, games and utilities. The only downside was the sound quality was not up to par with other phones but this really could be due to a dozen plus reasons.
Summary: A high quality phone that raises the standards.
