Nokia N95 8GB
Advantages: Packed full of features, smart looks and design
Disadvantages: Battery life
I have had one of these beauties for just over a week now and I have to say I am very pleased with it.
After negotiating a free upgrade with Vodafone to replace my N73 (another excellent phone) I was eager to try out the N95 8gb and it's many features and so far, I have not been disappointed. I have always preferred Nokia ever since I had a 3210 many years ago, and this certainly continues the trend of Nokia handsets I have been very satisfied with.
For some reason the handset supplied by Vodafone did not have the 'rotate screen' function (the screen will automatically shift from portrait to landscape depending on which way you hold the handset - nice feature once you get used to it) enabled but this was easily fixed by updating the firmware (easily done).
The wi-fi function worked fine when I tested it in a Wetherspoons Pub using their free access - once the phone has picked up the network you simply input the username and password and away you go - I certainly found it easy to use.
The 5 megapixel camera produces excellent quality shots in daylight - although I was slightly disappointed with the flash in lower light. However there are a number of options that can be adjusted on the camera that I have yet to try.
GPS - I have briefly tested the internal GPS using the Nokia Maps application that came installed on the phone and it seemed to work well, picking up several satellites whilst indoors. It will never be as good as a dedicated sat-nav system but for a mobile phone features such as this are still pretty impressive.
Battery life - at the moment I am having to charge it every couple of days, though this is almost certainly due to making good use of the music player etc. - time between charges can be extended by switching off the WLAN scanning and 3G network and so on.
The 8gb memory should be ample for large amounts of photos, music and applications. For example, I have loaded over 11 hours of music so far, several applications and there is still room for well over 6,000 5 megapixel photos - very impressive, the only downside being this memory cannot be expanded further.
Finally an excellent feature in my opinion is the 3.5mm jack which enables you to connect the phone to a hi-fi system or a television using the supplied cable. Of course this means you can also use any headphones you wish - ideal if you dislike the headset that comes with the phone.
To sum up - a smart looking, feature packed phone which I highly recommend. Thanks for reading!
Summary: A superb handset - get it if you can!
