AHH! I have a new phone, well it isn’t that new, I have had it since September 24th! However, I decided to write this review a good few months after having the phone so I can explain the full range of its uses! Why did I get a new phone? As my trusty Phillips C12 charger broke and nowhere sells the charger for that phone, and well nobody sells that phone anymore! I had that phone for five wonderful years. I am not one of these people who feel that it is a necessity to have a new and up-to-date phone. So when I was left with the issue of buying a new phone I was left not knowing what I wanted!
My first decision was to look about the Internet for what designs were about! I only looked on www.o2.co.uk as I am aware of the other tariffs available: Virgin, 3, Vodafone, Orange, T Mobile etc But I found them from what I have seen and heard from very reliable sources these are all a complete rip off. Now, normally I go for the pay as you go option BUT I wanted a contract phone as I was paying approximately £20.00 a month on pay as you go whereas this amount on contract could gain me more. Looking about the website I could see that ‘camera phones’ were all the rage and the idea of this appealed to me. So that I could catch my drunken mates antics on a night out and embarrass them at a later date with it! Hehe mwahahhahahaha Me evil?! Never!
However, the website said that it could take a while for delivery and I did need a phone pretty much instantly as I have to remain in contact with parents as last minute school plans occur and so that my sisters could contact me if need be. Not at all to be able to text my mates (and boyfriend) when need be from boring school lessons! ;-) This then left me with the option of marching immediately down to Bluewater, okay I didn’t march My dad gave me a lift-with my mum of course! Not at all part of my devious plan for them to get me a contract phone! Well I am not 18 so they’d have to take it out in their names but I am paying for it!
As soon as we got there approachable, friendly and honest staff met us. The man who was ‘dealing with us’ was so honest he told us about what faults had been reported to what phones and what would be the cheapest way to get a brilliant new phone! After going through all the options the Sagem my x-6 struck my eye! It was small (but not too small), compact (easy to fit into a bag), lightweight (not to heavy to carry in a bag) and silver (a smart and stylish colour). A major reason why I have a mobile phone is to text people and recently I have found they have been making phones with too small keypads which make it impossible to type with! The keys on this phone are not too small but yet again they are not too big! There is also a scroll button, which allows you to flick up and down and left to right easily which makes texting a lot quicker and easier. However, I do have tiny hands and tiny fingers so I do not find the keys to be too small, some people have complained that the keys are too small and that they regularly mistype and press too many keys, so be warned!!!
Now, I did originally buy this phone on contract but for one month they charged me £705.88 pence a month in which I was at school every day for school times and I only really used my phone for texting people and very few calls were made. After this, I complained to O2 and asked them to send me an itemised bill and they had in fact said that I had called people when I had been in lessons at school!!! I did ring O2 to try to get my money back but I have had no such luck :-( I now have, reluctantly, an 02 pay as you go simcard which I have to top up with £10.00 a month and for this I get 300 free SMS messages a month (I could have so many MMS and SMS messages but I just pay for the MMS messages as I use them). SMS is referred to as text messaging and MMS is the sending of media messages, e.g. sending pictures.
The phone does not have to remain silver it has changeable front and back covers (upon purchase you could buy it with either a blue front or the silver one that I opted for!). I personally think that the silver one looks better. The blue one is shown in the picture! There are many shops you can purchase the changeable covers from and I think these will be out for a while as this is a relatively new phone, which hasn’t appeared out on purchase on the pay as you go option yet! I think that the silver covers looks best as there is a non-changeable silver bit that is shown in the main picture, please see my pictures for the silver version.
~~~How Does The Phone Look?~~~
------------------------------------------------- -----
It is all silver which I picked myself, there is a choice between this and the blue one that you can see in the main picture displayed. It is approximately 4.5 inches (11 cm) long and it is approximately 1.75 inches (4.5cm) wide. It weighs 106g, which is incredibly light this is including the weight of the battery!!! The screen is large compared to most other mobile phones and this is what I think I like best about the phone, as it is easy to read text messages sent to you and you do not have to squint up close to the screen just to read a text message! It is relatively small and is easy to fit into a pocket or handbag. The screen displays up to 12 lines - 128 X 160 pixels. It is also a colour screen (65k).
The back is silver and is bobbly this is so that it grips to tables and does not fall off of the surface. It has the camera attachment here, which is protected by a slide shutter door so that the lens does not get damaged. The camera lens is fixed; so it does not rotate to suit. There is however a miniature mirror next to the slide-shutter which allows you to see yourself when you are trying to take a picture of yourself with the phone.
What can be seen to be unique about this phone is the fact that it has a keypad and a scroll bit in the middle to scroll through things easily. There is a button with a green speaker symbol; when receiving a call or dialling out you press this to speak to the person calling you or the person that you are calling. If you press this button again then the phone is activated to ‘speakerphone’ mode, which is where you can keep the phone away from your ear and listen to what the person is saying, this is particularly helpful as you can do other things whilst making a phone call, such as packing your school-bag
~~~The Menu~~~
--------------------------------
This consists of these main areas: PHONEBOOK, MESSAGES, CAMERA, MULTIMEDIA, WAP, GAMES, ORGANISER, SETTINGS and MY SERVICES.
In the Menu it is easy to scroll through by simply pressing up and down on the scroll keypad. There are also animated pictures for each section, each section has a moving picture that is relevant to the area e.g. for phonebook it has a red phonebook opening with a pen writing inside it which is then closed. A different animation is to be found for each section.
~~~PHONEBOOK~~~
-----------------------------------
It is the first tab in the menu selection, you are greeted by a red animated phonebook being opened and written in and then closed. You are greeted instantly by a ‘contacts menu’ selection. Here it has your own number ready to view. You also have the choice of being able to ‘add contact’, look at ‘call groups’ and view the ‘memory’ capacity. It is in add contact that you can add a new person’s entry into your phone the details that you can save on each person is: Last Name, First Name, Number 1, Email, Number 2, Number 3, Call group, Company, Comment, Photo. When you have entered all the details that you want on someone you simply select save. By saving a photo of the person who is your contact, when you call them or they call you their picture along with their name that they are saved as flashes constantly on the screen, it remains there when you are talking on the phone to this person as well. However, when you receive a text no picture is seen, it simply states that you have received a message from what you saved your contact as. You can also save comments on people where you can put any additional information that you want.
You also have ‘call groups’ you can create up to 15 call groups in which you can save different contacts. The point in this is that you can designate different ring tones to the call groups and so if out and you are busy you know when you are receiving a call from someone you urgently want to talk to. You also have the option of the phone vibrating in different ways e.g., constant vibrate, vibrate then ring etc. This is available for the receiving of SMS and MMS messages as well as phone calls.
You can have up to 100 CONTACTS saved to your simcard, this is NOT 100 numbers that can be stored for each contact you can have three numbers stored per contact. This saves having to have a separate entry for someone’s house and mobile number! However, you also have the ability to save numbers to your phone, which I have used 4 % of and I have got well over 250 contacts saved.
~~~MESSAGES~~~
---------------------------------
The animated picture for this is a pen writing a message on a notepad, which then gets put into the envelope, which then has a picture, and some music notes inserted into the envelope before the envelope is sealed.
In this section there is the options of: COMPOSE, INBOX, OUTBOX, DRAFTS, OPTIONS, MEMORY and LOCAL INFO.
It is in COMPOSE where you write either an SMS (text message) to send or you can either compose a MMS (media message) to send. For SMS You can activate zoom which makes the writing of the message look big as you type it, this is handy for those who may be short-sighted, but you can deactivate the zoom to have a smaller font. There is also a dictionary function like predictive text which some people find helps them to type quicker and there is also a number and character insertion mode. For MMS you simply have to select who you want to send it to and the message you want to send and then click send and voila it is done for you.
INBOX is where all messages that are sent to you are stored you can save 100 to the phone and 10 to the simcard a total of 110 messages that can be stored this is a lot more then any other phone I know to allow you to store. This is one of the best features of the phone, the fact that you do not have to delete messages for fear of your inbox being made too full!
OUTBOX is where messages that you attempted to send but didn’t successfully send get stored. Which you can resend at a later date or delete, as you wish.
DRAFTS is where messages that you type and then decide to stop halfway through yet chose not to completely deleted get saved here. You can then add to them when you wish and then send them to the recipient at a later date.
OPTIONS allows you to decide if you want to store SMS or MMS messages that you send outwardly and how long validation period should be etc.
MEMORY tells you how much SMS and MMS space you have left on your phone, mine has never yet come close to being filled and I do a lot of text messaging and I save lots of my messages!
.
~~~CAMERA~~~
----------------------------
The animated picture for this is simply a rotating digital camera. Selecting this function simply takes you to being able to take a picture with the camera that is built-in to the phone. There is no rotating camera on this phone you simply slide back the protective shutter and away you go!!! The scroll button allows you to zoom into a certain area and you can take pictures at any distance away that you feel is adequate. You can zoom in up to four times! This phone can take pictures successfully even in night-light due to the different resolutions that you can save the pictures at. You can save as ‘high resolution’ or to ‘mobile format.’ I personally always use high resolution and I find that it gets images perfectly and the skin tone and colour is 100% accurate. I feel that it is in fact hard to take pictures of yourself successfully… this is one of the faults. The phone could be improved by having a rotating camera.
~~~MULTIMEDIA~~~
----------------------------------------
The animated image for this is a file opening with a picture, a photo, a film and some music notes flying out of it before the file closes again. Inside this section there is: MY PHOTOS, MY PICTURES, MY SOUNDS and MEMORY.
MY PHOTOS is the section where all of the photos that you take with the camera are saved, except for those pictures that are used for each contact in the phonebook to be displayed when you call them or they call you. These are saved in the phonebook with each individual contact’s information- you can use these as wallpapers and screensavers.
MY PICTURES is the section where all pictures that you receive via MMS get saved if you want to keep the pictures- you can use these as wallpapers and screensavers.
MY SOUNDS is a section in which downloaded ring tones that you get from using the WAP service on your phone goes. There is a charge of £3.50 per song that you download. It is also here that if you did any recording on the recorder, the files that you made get saved here.
MEMORY this shows you how much space there is left on your phone in KB for every section of the phone that there is.
~~~WAP~~~
--------------------------
The animated icon for WAP is a person situated on top of the world and the world is spinning around as this person is stood on top of the world whilst a magnifying class is circling the globe. This phone has access to the Internet however using the Internet via your mobile phone is not the same as using the Internet through your PC computer. For one, images on websites do not show and you can be very much limited to browsing the 02 websites of downloading pictures, ring tones etc. There is also the use of chat rooms and I have managed to access my hotmail account once via this WAP service but generally speaking it fails. I do not use the WAP service very often, as the Internet is very limited as such. It is best simply to use it to add features to your phone such as new ring tones or wallpapers.
You can download wallpapers, ring tones and games from using this facility it is easy to browse around and you can preview the picture before you buy it, if you have a contract phone the cost is added to your phone and if you have a pay as you go phone the charge is taken off of your credit!!! It costs £3.50 per item to download.
~~~GAMES~~~
---------------------------
The animated picture for this section is a vibrating game controller very much similar to one of those found on a Playstation 2. The phone comes with two games provided PICTURE PUZZLE and MEGABOX CONQUEST.
PICTURE PUZZLE is a game where there are so many squares (the number of squares depends upon the level that you select) which are all muddled up and by using the scroll keys to guide the squares in different directions you have to try and rearrange the squares into the picture that they show. This game is quite difficult and as it is the same picture it can be seen to be quite tedious at times. The pattern is muddled up in a different style every time but there are very few backgrounds to re-arrange.
MEGABOX CONQUEST is a game where you are a small ship and you have to guide it across the area in all directions to gain territory. You have to pilot the ship in a way that you don’t get hit by enemies nor must they touch the trail that you have made before you reach the other end of land. This game has a variety of levels with different enemies to attack you and varying number of enemies. This game I find is very addictive and is much more fun and enjoyable to play then picture puzzle.
There is also another section here which is DOWNLOADED GAMES here you can get games from the catalogue and when you do download games they get saved under this heading. You can have up to two downloaded games simultaneously but if you want any more games then you have to delete one of the previously downloaded games. To download a game it costs £3.50 a time. I downloaded one game called WALL BREAKER this is very much similar to the traditional game where a ball hits a platform and you have to hit as many of the blocks down. I think the traditional form was called TENNIS where you have to use a block to hit it from one end to the other. This game has a variety of levels and different twists to game play by making the blocks smaller or larger or even by splitting the single ball into three balls.
~~~ORGANISER~~~
-----------------------------------
The animated icon for this is a clock with the hands rapidly moving around it whilst a red pen busily plots dates on a diary. The functions that are available in this area are DIARY, TODO, CALCULATOR, CONVERTOR, ALARM and TIMER.
In the DIARY section is where you can write things that you need to remember on certain dates it could be meeting someone, a dentist appointment, someone’s birthday etc. It will alert you on the specified day and time that you set the reminder for. You can easily delete the reminders that you no longer need by selecting the ‘CLEAN UP’ selection. You can also see what you have planned from month to month, by week, by the actual day you look at it, or you can enter a date for any day to view what plans you may have that day!!! This I have found to be particularly useful for remembering appointments and I entered my mock exams and dates in it to remember them by. This reminded me daily of what room to go to and what exam it was-much more easier then carrying around bits of paper. I will definitely be using this method for my AS exams. It is also good for remembering when people’s birthdays are and when they are going to be on holiday etc.
TODO this is pretty much similar to the DIARY section. This alerts you on a set day with a specific reason about something that you wanted to do. In this section you can write out your shopping lists, write reminders for people to call, gifts to buy etc. This can simply be used to look at or you can receive a reminding flash up message with a ring tone.
CALCULATOR, okay this sounds pretty basic, yes, it is a calculator. But you can do extended sums without needing to re-enter things, it can be used for working out a whole shopping bill if need be. It has basic functions such as add, subtract, multiply and divide, also on here you can, once having worked out the answer, go straight into conversion mode (as described below).
CONVERTER, this is a converter. You can convert to and from any country’s currencies. I personally use this when I get paid by gozingsurveys.com to find out how much in Pounds Sterling (£) I actually make, as that site pays you in $US. You can convert not just from Pounds Sterling (£) into any other country’s currency; you can convert from one country’s currency into Pounds Sterling (£). This also tells you the current exchange rate.
ALARM, this too can seem pretty self explanatory, you simply activate or deactivate it for a specific time that you want to be woken up or whatever you need the alarm set for. You can also activate a ring tone to wake you rather then a bleeping sound, mine is currently set to a dog barking LOL.
TIMER, this seems different to most other timers you can activate or deactivate and when you select it you simply enter in seconds, minutes or hours, how long you want to be timed for and when this period of time is up the selected alert tone (which can be a ring tone) starts activating and making noise so that you are aware that the timer finished the time that you set it up for.
~~~SETTINGS~~~
---------------------------------
The animated icon for this is as red toolbox opening up each side and on one side a spanner and a screwdriver flies out and on the other side a pair of pliers flies out. In this section there are a variety of options: SOUNDS, DISPLAY, CAMERA, LANGUAGES, CALLS, SECURITY, NETWORKS, OTHERS, SHORTCUT and DATE/TIME.
It is in SOUNDS that you can decide what ring tone you want your phone to have. You do this by simply selecting the ‘RING TONES’ section within the SOUNDS menu. With this phone there are 40 polyphonic ring tones already provided, you can also download from the WAP service on your phone other ring tones to use and by using the recorder you can in fact record your own sounds and then use this as a ring tone.
It is also in this section that you come to ‘VIBRATE’ mode. Here you can select what vibration you want, if any, to occur when you receive a phone call. You can select from options such as Only Vibrate, No Vibration, Vibrate then Ring or Vibrate and Ring. I use the latter as when in a loud environment, such as when I am walking home on the busy roads. You cannot always here your phone ringing but you can feel it vibrating in your pocket. Which means that this way you do not miss any calls. I like it to be able to ring as well as sometimes I leave my phone upstairs in my room and sit downstairs on the computer, if it actually rings I can hear it down here and get to the phone before I miss the call.
SILENT MODE is found within this section, this is a bit of a nuisance to be honest. I think it would be much better to have the silent mode available by pressing a simple button, rather then having to scroll through a load of menus. I say this because if you are in a meeting or at school and you forget to set your phone to silent, if it starts ringing you have to go through a lengthy process before actually being able to set it to silent, which could be quite embarrassing!
BEEPS is another section, here you can select if you want a beep for when your battery is close to running out and if you want a beep for when your phone finds a network connection and also there is a section for ‘KEYPAD BEEPS.’ Here you can select if you actually want keypad beeps for when you type in a numbers, type texts or when you generally press the keypad. Here you can select ‘inactive’ which is when there are no beeps regardless of what sound mode your phone is on. Whether you want a normal ‘beep’ which is quite piercing and high pitched in sound, or you can have the ‘tones’ selection which makes the same sound as any other mobile phone’s keys being pressed. Lastly, you can have fun’ beeps which sounds a bit like bubbles popping when you press the keys. I tend to have the fun beeps as it is different and unusual to most other phone’s keypad beeps and also as I have found it is great for annoying people! :-D
Here is also ‘RECORDER,’ this I believe is the most fun part of the phone; you can speak into it and save what you say, you can also play music and save this. With these saved files you can then use these as a ring tone , or as a tone for the alarm etc. This has provided me with endless hours of entertainment in itself and I have managed to record some friends saying some embarrassing things when drunk!!! LOL
DISPLAY, is where you can alter the way your phones screen looks. Here is a section called ‘SKINS’ this is the colour of your phone and how it appears when you go to the menu section etc. The choices are between ‘Acqua’ which is like aqua (all to do with water) and is mainly blue in colour. ‘Paysage blanc’ is another option, this is whitey-green in colour and is quite an environmental selection showing pictures of clouds and deserts when you select a different option. You also have the choice of ‘Acqua Rose’, which is similar to aqua in the fact that all the menu options take a watery effect but the tabs are in a purple colour. The last choice is ‘Paysage’ which is a dark green in colour and again has the clouds and deserts for backgrounds.
Then still within this section is a part called ‘WALLPAPERS,’ here they have the already pre-used wallpapers but you can also download your own using the WAP service on your phone. Or you can simply use media from ‘MY PICTURES’ and ‘MY PHOTOS’ as a wallpaper. Therefore, you could have a picture of yourself or your loved one/ones in this place. A wallpaper is the phone’s background when not in use.
There is also in this section an area called ‘SCREENSAVERS’ this is similar to ‘WALLPAPERS’ (as outlined above) the only difference is that you can set a delay time for it to appear! This is calculated in seconds, you can set it for as long or as little time as you like.
Next within this section is another area referred to as, ‘CAMERA’. This is where you can set a ‘TIMER’ for how long you want it to wait before taking a picture, this is handy for taking pictures of yourself as you can then line it up properly within time and not have to use your fingers to press the buttons! You can select any length of time that you wish. There is also the choice of ‘CLICK SOUND’ this is the sound that your phone will make as it takes the photo you have a choice between the traditional sounding click of a camera, a cuckoo noise, a digital clock noise, a beep, a doorbell noise and to have no noise made at all. Then there is the choice of ‘FORMAT’ this is where you select how you want photos to be taken. To be saved they can either be saved as ‘mobile format’ or ‘high resolution.’ In this section you can preset it to a specific choice, but if you don’t know how you will always want the picture saved you can select ‘on request’ which will ask you every time you take a picture and if you wanted it saved, what format you would want it saved in.
There is also a LANGUAGES section, here there is a choice of 9 languages that you can have. The language that you select is the language in which your phone’s commands will be set in. The choices of languages are: English, German, Italian, Spanish, French, Automatic, Dutch, Turkish and Portuguese.
There is a section entitled ‘CALLS’ here you can read your ‘COUNTERS’ to see how long you have been on the phone in outgoing calls, how long you have been on the phone in incoming calls, how long the last call was and the total time that you have spent on your phone. You can reset these counters. It is also here in ‘DISPLAY NUMBER’ where you select if you want your number showing when you call someone or if you don’t want your number showing when you call someone. It is also here that you can activate ‘CALL WAITING’. This is where someone calls you whilst you are having a chat on your mobile phone to someone else. You can pick up the incoming call and speak to them then return to your previous call. This is handy as there are no more engaged tones and you do not miss any calls. It is also here where you can select ‘AUTO REDIAL’ this is if you call someone and their phone is engaged your mobile phone can keep trying to call them back in 10 second intervals until it rings through! This is handy as then you know when the person you are trying to call is off of the phone!
It is also here that you can activate ‘VOICEMAIL’ this is your personalised answer machine service for when your phone is turned off or you do not reach your mobile in time and then someone leaves a message. Here you can make your own personalised greeting or simply have the message where they say your number. There is also the option of ‘CALL FORWARD’ here you can opt to have calls that are made to your mobile diverted elsewhere e.g. to your home phone line or to your work line. This can be handy, as then you do not need to carry your phone around you all the time!
There is a section within ‘SETTINGS’ referred to as ‘SECURITY’ it is here that you can activate features such as ‘KEYPAD LOCKING’, which simply locks the keypad if the phone has not been used for 5 seconds. It also has in this section ‘PIN NUMBER’ here you can change the standard pin number that you get with the phone to one that you can remember more easily. This is handy as when you phone is turned off, to access it, once turned on, you have to enter your personal pin number. Therefore, no ‘unwanted persons’ can simply access your phone and read personal messages or get people’s numbers!!! There is also a section known as ‘PHONE CODE’ here you can edit the standard code that you received with the phone to a code that you can memorise more easily. This prevents people accessing your phone when it is turned on. When it is locked you have to access the phone by entering this code and then you can browse through all the menus. This is set up formally by using the ‘CONFIDENTIALLY’ section, which then can be activated for your organiser, calls and messages by entering this pin number. This is something that I do not use as I always have my phone on me at all times, but for someone who leaves their phone laying about this option is ideal.
There is also here an option for ‘CALL BARRING’ you can bar incoming or outgoing calls. This can be to all incoming/outgoing calls or to individual selected numbers, or a grouped number e.g. 08459 numbers. This is handy as if you have a phone that, for argument sakes, a relative keeps using e.g. my sister calling her boyfriend from my phone. You can simply bar the persons number they keep calling and then your bill will not be run up. You can also bar all incoming calls if you need to be alone, or if you’re busy, in a meeting etc.
There is a section enabled ‘OTHERS’ it is here that you can select ‘ENERGY SAVING’ which allows you to decide how long the backlight should be on before dimming out- if you are not using your phone and even if you are using the phone! This is good as the less time you have the background light on for, the longer time your phone’s battery will last.
In ‘SHORTCUTS’ you can select what the keys above the call rejection and call acception buttons do what. Mine are set to camera and read messages. This is handy as you then don’t have to scroll through the whole menu process to get to these areas!!!
It is in the ‘DATE/TIME’ section that you can ‘SET THE DATE/TIME’ this is pretty self explanatory, you will need to use this when putting the clocks an hour forward and an hour behind. In ‘DISPLAY’ you can select how you want the clock on the front screen to be displayed you can either have ‘digital’ which displays the clock in numeral form such as ’20:23 Thu 29 APR.’ Or you can have it in ‘analog’ mode, which has a picture of a clock face with the hands pointing to the relevant times and it also displays the date. If you select none, there is no time or date displayed on the screen. I personally use the digital mode as I find the analog mode takes too long to read, as the clock is not very big and the hour spaces between the numbers are too close to each other. The digital clock is quick and easy to read, and I like to have a clock on me at all times and the date displayed as I don’t wear a watch and use this to check the time. I am also useless with dates so simply popping out my phone does marvels!!! Also there is a selection for ‘TIME ZONE’ here you can change your phone into what area you are in and it will ultimately update the clock times for you, therefore when going abroad you need only select this to have the correct time!!!
~~~Overall~~~
---------------------------------
I personally really like this phone as it is unique when compared to most others. I also have a firm stand where I refuse to buy any Nokia phone at any point in my life. I don’t know why I have such a huge issue with them. Their phones never seem to appeal to me, maybe it is because everyone seems to have a Nokia phone and I like to be different. The Sagem myx-6 phone has no aerial which is a bonus, this means that you don’t have a big bit sticking out in the way and that you don’t have to be weary of breaking it by twiddling it! It is also lightweight and is not as big, bulky or as heavy as my previous phone the Phillips c12 (also known as Phillips Savvy to some) was. It also has a wide variety of features, some unique, that it offers. It is stylish and sleek yet the disadvantages are that it does not have BLUETOOTH which is pretty popular at the moment and it also doesn’t have JAVA which would allow you to get more games it does however have IN-FUSIO which means that you can still get games in colour and that play decently! The battery life is quite a long time I have spoke on it for just over 4 hours straight before and not charged it and it managed to work for the rest of that day and the day after that before needing charging! I recommend this phone to anyone, but if you’re looking for the most newest and up-to-date phone then bare in mind that this phone does not have a rotating camera, BLUETOOTH or JAVA.
