Advantages: Small, Cheap, Colour screen

Disadvantages: Buttons very tiny

Sometimes you come across a very generous person who, despite their own circumstances, gives you an unexpected present for no apparent reason. Well this has happened to my youngest daughter when one of her friends Mums bought her a mobile phone – I was astounded and actually shaking when she gave it to me!!!

The phone is a Sagem myx-2 and was £25 from Currys. It is locked into the Orange Pay As You Go network. Now this, to me who has a Nokia 3310, is a very small phone – around 5 inches long and an inch and a half wide. It has a colour screen that is just over an inch square. It does fit snugly into your hand though and as my daughter has hands even smaller than mine it is ideal for her. I find the buttons very tiny to use though and it is easy to catch the wrong button, although I think she finds them OK.

The menus although comprehensive are actually rather hard to navigate around compared to my Nokia and it is rather easy to actually get ‘lost’ in the system. I even managed to make a call without realising it the other day! They seem to have gone overboard with the amount of graphics rather than looking at how easy it is to use.

So what can it do?

Well obviously it makes phone calls and the sound quality seems to be OK and we have had no problems hearing or being heard. Also it sends those text things, which take me a fortnight to write, but which my daughter can write with her eyes closed! It has that irritating predictive text on too but we have found out how to turn it off! Received texts are quite easy to read on the screen. The phone book can store up to 90 names and numbers on the SIM card and 250 on the phones internal memory – you can choose where to save them when you input a new contact.

You can also exchange picture messages with other compatible phones. There are some Animations which come with the phone but we haven’t used these as I suspect they cost more than 12p to send! It has a disappointing range of games considering you could do quite a lot with having a colour screen, really only one which is a puzzle putting numbers in order in a square.

This is also A WAP phone and you can do all of the normal things associated with that service. Again it is not something we have investigated yet. Of course if you wanted to play more games then you could use this option.

The screen is colour and the phone comes with a variety of backgrounds (flowers, animals, landscapes) to choose from. I personally find the screen quite garish but my daughter loves it – I think that is just an age thing really!! It also has a large variety of ringtones including frogs croaking and cockerels cock-a-doodle dooing! Absolutely ideal for my 10 year old really. The ringtone volume is a bit hit or miss though – really either quiet or loud.

One thing which is really annoying is that when the phone is not in use it is quite hard to see whether it is actually switched on or not as the screen goes very dark and could easily be mistaken for being off. The battery life seems pretty good and it takes 4 hours to charge from flat, the charger just plugs in to the bottom of the phone. There is quite a good handbook that comes with the phone and it will answer most queries and point you in the right direction, although I think the best way to learn with this is just to get on and use it!

It has all the security features of more expensive phones, PIN codes, keypad locks etc and can actually make a voice call if you are still into actual person to person contact. It also has all the accessories you would expect – calculator, alarm, timer etc.

Personally I still prefer my old Nokia and I wouldn’t choose to be on Orange, but a mobile for £25 who can really complain! All in all for the price I think this is quite a nice little phone.
