Samsung GT E1170
Advantages: Cheap, works well, good sound quality
Disadvantages: None for me but is definitely not for technophiles
The Samsung E1170 is as basic a mobile phone as you can probably get these days. When my dearly departed old Sony Ericcson (itself a hand-me-down from my husband) I was not a happy bunny. I do not really have much interest in mobiles, seeing them as a necessity rather than a useful tool. I do not really use it an awful lot and as such only have a PAYG agreement and a Blackberry which is supplied by my work for emails and other work related bumpf. I also wanted a phone which did not cost a lot.
Having had £9 in my Orange Phone fund, I toddled along to my local Orange store to make this purchase. I thought that it looked surprisingly sturdy for such a cheap phone, the other ones that they had at around this price range were really cheap and flimsy looking. Yes, this phone is small but it has a nice sleek finish and looks better quality than you would expect.
As I am also pretty useless at remembering to charge my phone I was also pretty impressed at the touted battery life - 600 mins talk time and 648 hours stand-by time which to be honest is pretty phenomenal. Whilst in an ideal world I might have liked a camera, I really did not want to put out the necessary £20 extra for one which would have been of poor quality anyways.
I will give you a run-through of its features, but in essence - all it does really is make and receive calls!
The menu is accessed but the largeish button in the middle and the silver casing around this provides the directional buttons. Via the menu, you can access a call log, phonebook, calendar, memo, messages, 1 Tetris type game called Jewel Quest, Applications including a calculator, convertor, timer, stopwatch and torch light, alarms and settings (which of course include display and ringtone settings.) The phone has quite a powerful vibrating alert. It also has a function that I have never seen before called 'fake call' which means that by pressing a combination of buttons, and after a gap to make it seem feasible, it will appear to ring, thereby getting you out of any awkward situation.
The phone itself has in-built settings to ensure that it saves as much power as possible. For example, after just 10 seconds of not being used, it will immediately lock itself and the backlight will disappear which I appreciate will be irritating to some people. However, when you do unlock it it will take you back to where you were.
The sound quality when making or receiving a call cannot be faulted in my opinion and you can adjust the volume by using the directional buttons. It also has a loudspeaker function.
The phone comes with a short instruction manual (it only needs a short one!) and a charger as you would expect.
The phone is extremely easy to use. The only thing which can be a bit fiddly is that it is quite easy to accidently change it to/from predictive text and then not so easy to work out how you revert it back!
Transferring numbers from my old SIM to my new one was relatively simple and did not really take any intervention from me.
After 4 months of using this phone non-stop I can truly vouch for the fact that the battery life is exceptional. I am finding that with the amount that I use my phone - which is normally 1 short phonecall and a few texts a day, it is lasting for 3-4 weeks without needing to be charged. Even when the battery indicator starts flashing the vibrating alert starts going I have found that I can have up to a day before it goes completely. To charge back to full usually takes around 2 hours.
For something so basic, it is quite slick looking and light weight. For the most part, I have found it quite sturdy - in particular the backing which protects the battery and SIM card is very secure. However, I have experienced some slight cracking of the screen early on in its usage, not enough to obscure the visuals, but enough to be quite irritating. It has not cracked any further to my knowledge since it initially happened, but I have to say that I do not think that I have treated it any differently than any other phone that I have had in the past and none of them have ever had screens that cracked.
In conclusion, I am really happy with this phone ; of course it will not convert anyone who needs all the mod cons, but the energy efficiency and sheer effectiveness make it as good as a bog standard basic mobile phone could possibly be, in my opinion.
