Advantages: Many features, good reliable phone
Disadvantages: The touch screen is very sensitive
I had decided after browsing the internet for phones that the best option on the market for me was the Samsung GT M8800 Pixon. I wanted a phone that looked good but more importantly the phone had to have a superior camera. I'm aware that you will never get a photo from your phone that will resemble anything taken from a camera itself but having a little boy I wanted a phone that was going to give me the best possible pictures available from a phone for when I forgot the camera and this one seemed to fit the profile better than any other and as a free upgrade this was perfect.
The phone itself is black in colour measuring 10.5 cm x 5.5 cm x 1cm, compared to other phones currently on the market this may seem quite large which worried me at first as I tend to like the smaller more compact ones, but after having the phone and using it for a couple of weeks it really isn't that noticeably big and it is quite light for its size weighing just 121g. The screen is very large bright and clear measuring 7.2cm x 4.4 cm. It is all operated by touch screen which I like although the keys do tend to be very sensitive so you could end up inadvertently pressing the wrong key or scrolling passed the picture or name that you are looking for, this doesn't tend to be so much of a problem for me as I have quite thin fingers and long nails but do find that the stylus comes in very useful at times, my b/f on the other hand has slightly fatter fingers than I and finds it very frustrating trying to operate the keys. The stylus can be hung from the bottom of your phone and at first I didn't think that this was a good idea and the manufacturer should have put more thought into it but after it was attached it didn't bother me as much as I assumed it would and is always easy to hand when needed but does on occasion tend to come loose and if not careful may get lost (touch wood this has not yet happened but have come close on a couple of occasions).
Another thing that reassured me when choosing this phone was that it was made by Samsung, I have had a couple of Samsung phones in the past and found that they are reliable, well made and defiantly a manufacturer I would trust, giving me piece of mind that this phone would last the length of my 12 month contract.
The battery life I have found to be very good on the phone lasting around 4-6 days dependent on the use (I.e. games, texting, photos or calling) although it is only a personal phone I cant comment if it would stand up to the needs of a business phone.
overview of functions
Alert types - Like most phones out on the market now this phone has vibration alert, the availability to download polyphonic and mp3 ringtones and also enables you to use speakerphone. I like the fact that I am able to download the ringtones as it allows me to completely personalise my own phone and swap different tones with family and friends via Bluetooth, the sound quality of these I have found to be very clear and superior to any previous phones I or my family have owned.
camera - The phone has a built in 8 mega pixel camera which I have found to be very impressive for a camera phone, they are not as sharp as with a regular camera but this can not be expected from any camera phone, but on a positive the photos are clear enough to be transferred to a computer and printed off for the family album.
The camera has an auto flash, face, smile and blink recognition and auto focus which helps me get the best out of all the pictures I take and like I mentioned before this was very important to me and goes well past what I expected of a camera phone.
The camera lens has an automatic shutter which keeps the lens protected and clean and does its job perfectly.
A video function is also built in which to my surprise I am yet to use so cant comment on how well this works but with the microphone and surround sound speakers that this phone has I don't think that it would be a let down, The also has a secondary function of video calling which I personally have never been interested in or felt the need for but the function is there if requires
Photos - The photos as I have said before are great quality from a camera phone and are all stored in a file which can be viewed by scrolling through them with your figure or if you turn the phone horizontal then by tilting the phone you activate an automatic slide which I found quite a novel and quirky feature. The phone has a 200 MB internal memory and can be increased up to a 16GB on a micro Sd card. Which is more memory than I can fill do no need to worry about taking too many pictures great bonus.
Texting - Texting can be done either manually or by predictive text, I personally love predictive text as I find it a lot easier but for those that don't it is not a necessity. The phone itself gives you two options when texting, if your phone is held vertically the familiar numbers and letters keypad is displayed alternatively if the phone is turned horizontally you will find the qwerty keyboard displayed with individual letters both options can be used for Manuel typing or predictive text. There is also an option to change the language you are writing in which is great as the predictive text can still be used what ever language you are using.
The different features that can be used when texting are sms mms or email which are all easy applications to use, and can be accessed at the bottom of the screen if your just writing a new message or within the menu if looking for sent messages, drafts, or your inbox
Phonebook - Your phonebook is capable of holding upto1000 contacts and photo call which is a lot more places than I have friends although with face book getting ever more popular I may have a lot more to add lol,
The details that can be added into each contacts profiles are a picture, Christian name and sir name, 2x phone numbers, email address, fax number, They can be added to a group (family, friends, work), choice of vibrations, birthday and any notes so a whole lot of information can be recorded. There are also extra fields that you can add to each contact like landline numbers. video call, business details. message tones, nicknames, company names, job title, private address and work address so a lot more information than I am ever likely to need but covers every eventuality.
The phone book can be entered through a little icon at the bottom of the screen or in the menu, favourite contacts can also be selected from a drop down quick menu at the side of the screen if you set this up. the individual contacts can be selected by scrolling your figure down the phone book or by clicking the little magnifier glass at the side and scrolling down letters all of which is very easy to do
Battery - The battery life for me as a personal user as I said before but for anyone using it as a business line the
standby time is up to 290 hrs for the 2G or 280 hrs for the 3G,
The talk time is up to 3hrs 40 mins for the 2G or 4 hrs for the 3G
other applications include :
3G
blue tooth
USB
Wap
Stereo FM radio with RDS
5+ downloadable games
GPS
Java
Tv out
Organiser
Document viewer - word / excel / PowerPoint / pdf
Voice memo and dial
Video editor
Auto lock function
I have found this phone to be very robust after being dropped numerous times by myself and thrown around by a heavy handed toddler I am qualified to give an accurate opinion on this and for the record the phone still looks like new
I would really recommend this phone to anyone who likes a good camera, gadgets, trick bits and an all round good phone, It is very easy to use and with quick a scroll down menu all applications are easy to find
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
After having this phone a good few months now (8 months to be exact) I do still find this to be a good phone but the touch screen being so sensitive is getting very tedious.
Summary: better than some, not as good as the iphone
