Advantages: Looks, features, sound quality, 3megapixel camera, internet, battery life
Disadvantages: Slow processing, no flash, charger lead not long enough
This phone was pretty much forced upon me when my birthday came around, which was probably a good thing as my old one was starting to lose its sound when calling someone.
I had my old phone for around 3 years and it a pretty basic phone, so I decided to upgrade to a touchscreen. I had never used one before, but found it easy to adapt to. I narrowed down my choices to the Tocco Lite or the LG Cookie. I went for the Tocco because it had more features, for the same price.
The features of this phone include a 3 inch full colour touchscreen, customisable/downloadable widgets for the home screen, 3.2 megapixel camera, excellent internet viewing capabilities, bluetooth and FM radio.
- Advantages -
I really love the aesthetics of this phone. I bought mine in white for something different. It comes in black, white or pink. The design is simple, with a large screen accompanied by a 'call' button, an 'end call' button and a 'back' button. It is also nice and slim, making it easy to fit into your back pocket. It took me a while to get used how wide the phone is though, because my old one was quite thin.
The various ways of customisation are also an advantage of this phone. There is a choice of themes, fonts, widgets etc. I personally find the 'create text message' widget a useful shortcut, and having a calendar on the background. You can also buy a micro SD card to expand your memory, which is useful for extra music which can also be used for ringtones and text message tones.
The variety of features is another advantage. As well as those listed above, there are many handy things such as a Google maps application and synchronise options for Google Mail etc. The music player is also of excellent quality.
With the internet, picture viewing and text message creation, the phone can be used horizontally if preferred. I myself don't like using the qwerty option for text message creation, but enjoy this option for internet and picture viewing.
This phone is luckily very easy to use. I was a bit apprehensive since I had never used a touch screen phone before this one, but was pleased after purchase. It does take a little getting used to though, and I wouldn't recommend this to people with big fingers.
I also found the battery life very impressive. It typically lasts 6 days without needing to recharge, but this depends on media player usage and internet access of course.
- Disadvantages -
The processing abilities of this phone irritate me sometimes. For example, when opting to 'delete all' messages or move files, it takes ages to do so. This only took about a second on my old Sony Ericsson.
Another annoying element of this phone is when adding your own music file as a ringtone from the memory card, it chooses to copy the file into phone memory, creating a unnecessary duplicate.
On a similar subject, ringtones can be any file format of music, which is handy. However, when changing the text message song, it only accepts mp3 files.
With a good camera, I would have expected a flash option with this phone, which it has not.
This may not be seen as a disadvantage to some, but more of a useful addition. This involves the general Samsung software itself. Like many other mobile phone brands, the Samsung has different profiles that you can change the settings on (normal/outdoors/silent/meeting etc). However, Samsung has made this a far too complex idea, where changing simple settings such as changing ringtones become long-winded by needing to change them via the profiles list. My old Sony Ericsson allowed me to simply use menu>settings>sound settings. This may not annoy some people, but it drove me insane when I first got the phone and wanted to quickly set everything up.
The only other small disadvantages were the difficulty of removing the back of the phone to insert the battery for the first couple of times, and the charger cable not being as long as I would prefer.
- Overall -
Although I have mentioned many more disadvantages than advantages in this review, I would still recommend the Tocco Lite. Those disadvantages simply take getting used to, and will not be a problem for those previously owning a Samsung. The advantages have much more day to day interaction. A great phone in my opinion.
Summary: A great phone - definately recommended!
