Those of you who know me will already know I am a carer for the elderly in their own homes, this means that as well as visiting them for several hours a day I am also on 24 hour response and as three of them are linked to the Careline system (a little button they can wear to press if they need help) I am down as their first responder. This of course means I need to be able to be contacted when ever, where ever.

To make it easier for Careline and my charges to contact me, I felt the need to buy a mobile phone, something I have never really wanted for my self as I always found one of the best things about going out was that I could get away from things like people always phoning and such but needs must.

Now I'm afraid I don't have a lot of faith in technology, my view on these phones that have games, camerass and videos etc, is that when one stops working they all do so I have a camera to take photos, a pc for games, internet etc and a camcorder that makes films so wanted a phone to make phone calls.

After the enthusiastic young man in the phone shop, had tried without success to sell me all manner of the latest gadgets I bought a Siemens A50 for £59.99. This included the phone, user book, battery charger and £1.00 starter credit.

I found the user book very helpful and informative, it is written in plain English and has illustrations to help you understand better.

The phone its self is quite attractive in dark blue and white with an easy to read screen, the screen is quite large enough to read easily, not a colour one but I don't need a colour one anyway. The phone is quite small at approximately 4 inches long so it fits nicely into my handbag.

It got quite a good clarity to the sound and is very easy to use. I ca

eceive text messages, which at first I thought I would have no need of but now find it very useful to communicate with my son and his girlfriend. Lisa is at university so she can?t answer the phone when in lectures so I can send a text message and she can read and reply when she's ready.

Adam works in construction and often can't hear his phone above the sound of the machinery so again text messages come in handy there too. It has something called predefined text, which means I don't have to type in the whole word. I just start to type and it guesses what I want to write, very clever this saves me a lot of time.

It has a large capacity phone book which is divided up into sections which makes it easy to find numbers, a menu which in which you can do quite a few things including enter set-up, change ring tones, set the clock or alarm clock, change the volume of the ring tone or the call its self, access the internet (wap) and play games.

I did find the wap a big let down, I tried to access the net which it allowed me to do but once there it seems quite useless as anything requested got a "your phone cannot perform this operation" not that I?m that bothered as I said I want it to make phone calls. Although I did manage to download a screensaver successfully.

Another useless thing is the games. There are two of them, "Stack Attack" which involves a silly little man waking from side to side trying not to get hit on the head with wooden creates and "Balloon Shooter" which as the title suggests you shoot at balloons. I did fiddle with these but very bored with them very quickly.

The only real down side to this phone when used as a phone is the number keys can be a little stick and sometimes dialling a number or using the menu can be a bit like trying to hit a moving target but this doesn't happen too often. The battery life is also quite short, I find I need to char
ge every 2-3 days.

hone is good if like me you need a phone that is a phone, it does have a few glitches but nothing too serious. I would recommend this phone as being very reliable, easy to use and of a reasonable price. I am quite satisfied with mine and find it very useful.
