Sony Ericsson Elm
Advantages: Great features, excellent graphics, Wi-Fi, 3G
Disadvantages: Very very slow - possibly caused by the memory card rather than the phone.
In the age of iPhone 4s, Blackberrys, Xperias and HTCs, the simple old style phone is often overlooked. Whilst the Sony Ericsson J10i (or Elm) lacks an impressive exterior, it is actually a pretty good phone. It has 3G capability, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, a 5MP camera, a memory card slot and many other features (such as a pedometer).
Elm is focused on being environmentally friendly, which means that it comes with very little packaging, the aforementioned pedometer (which also measures how much carbon you've saved) and a little message which pops up every time you unplug the phone from its charger reminding you to unplug the charger.
Whilst not having the processing speed, touch-screen or large database of compatible applications found with the mainstream mobiles, Elm is certainly competitive and good value for money (I believe it's £100 PAYG on Orange). Not locked to any network, the phone is very slick and is graphically impressive.
The only real problem I've had with the Elm is the speed. It seems to take a very long time to do anything or to respond. It takes a good few minutes to fully load up. Now it is possible that this is caused by the Samsung 4GB memory card I use, because my friend who has the same phone has no problems with his loading speed at all. Samsung have never really produced good products, so perhaps it is that which is slowing it down. Nevertheless, I would grant this piece of technology 4 stars and I would recommend it to anyone looking for a simple phone.
Summary: Excellent, simple-to-use, low-key - ideal for the non-conformist
