Advantages: works well as both a phone and mp3 player

Disadvantages: headphones are a little uncomfortable

I only change my phone every 3 years or so (unlike many of my friends who get a new phone every time it rains). So when i do change it, i better make sure that i get a good one. Around the time my last phone died i was in the process of saving up for an MP3 player, so i an attempt to kill 2 birds with 1 stone, i decided to plump for a Sony Ericsson Walkman phone... specifically this one, the W580i.

And now, 2 years down the line, i'm happy to report that i've never had any problems with it. It's functioned excellently in it's dual role of mobile phone and MP3 player.

Boasting a good but not over sized screen with an excellent resolution and colour balance, this phone has a simple yet attractive interface, perfect for browsing through it's numerous functions.

Battery life is excellent, and even now i'm yet to see any significant drop off in this area.

The MP3 player is on par with most stand alone MP3 units available at the time, with the added bonus of being able to play your tunes through the phones speaker... brilliant for on the beach, garden parties or when your car stereo breaks ... like mine.

The phone also has an impressive processing speed never struggling to catch up with fleet fingered users.

If i had to find a downside, i guess i've never been a fan of slide phones since grit, dust and sand etc can get into the sliders and lock it up a bit, but this isn't exclusive to this unit alone.

Also, the earphones provided can be a little uncomfortable, and the lead is also a bit on the short side.

As with all phones, the price of this unit varies, but i bought it as soon as it came on the market for around £180 and i considered that to be decent value at the time. By now, the phone will have dropped in price considerably and i've even seen it retail at around £40. So if you're looking for a bargain, you won't be disappointed with this. Quality item at a low price.

Summary: great item at a bargain price
