I acquired this Sony Ericsson W995 last year as my old phone stopped holding charge properly so this phone is my partners old one.
Now until last week it has been working perfectly despite being a few years old now. What happened last week was, well here is the message I was sending to a friend so see if you can tell what the problem is!
Hi, what tim os your train gt in? o you ancy mting atr your appointmnt.
Yep that's right the number 3 key has died so I have no D E or F in texts or number 3 in phone numbers. It is a right pain, if I fiddle enough it will work but when texting or even trying to post on Facebook I don't have 10 minutes waiting for 1 letter to work lol. Time for a new phone I think.
This phone is a push up the front part to reveal a normal 1-0 dial keypad with each number also representing letters of the alphabet for texting. The screen is a good size and can clearly view things on it without a struggle. I'm not into lots of technical items really so a simple phone like this is ideal for me. For example we have an apple TV and my partner is fed up of showing me how to use it lol. This phone allows me to make call, text, and get onto Facebook, the three most important uses it can have but saying that it does have a GPS thing (yes thing I don't know proper word) If I found myself lost then I open up the location servies tab and it will find my location, hopefully I'm old enough not to get myself lost but could come in useful if I was visiting a new area without my car satnav.
There aren't heaps of buttons on this phone, the picture shows that on the front the centre of the circle button is for accessing the screen menu and the circle gives quick access for contacts, messages, and sound controls. It has the call out and end call/off button and a quick internet access button. On the side of the phone you will find the camera and video filming controls.
Now the camera is 8.1 mega pixels which I feel is very good for a mobile phone camera and the quality of the pictures from it is also very good and clear, my partner prefers the camera on this phone to his i phone.
There is also a radio on this phone which I often use for listening to football if it's not on TV (yes a good that follows footy more then her partner does lol). I can listen on the headphones or leave the headphones plugged in and switch to speaker as the earphone cables act as the aerial.
Another feature I like about this phone is the speed dial which I have set up so number 1 is a person then number 2 etc. I have also a couple years ago on my old phone shown my son how to call daddy with speed dial, I was actually expecting my daughter when I taught him this and all he has to do is press the allocated number and the dial button. As I'm writing this I've realized his dad is actually on a different dial number on this phone but if something was to happen and dad was out he'd get through to his Grandad instead on the speed dial number he has learnt.
This phone stores lots of numbers and messages and always easily accessed. The phone records go up to a few weeks and show missed calls, received and calls made. The storage for messages must be huge as I rarely delete my messages. There is a option to view conversation between a friend you were texting so instead of trawling through looking through all messages for a particular one you can look through conversation with a particular person to find it.
This phone has had a few drops in it's time and still going strong about from the number 3 being on strike. the back sometimes will come off if dropped but slots back on easily. Talking of the back yes the back comes off easily so you can access the slim battery and sim card which is under the battery. The charge point on this phone is on the side, the opposite side from camera controls.
This isn't a heavy phone and fits into my jeans pocket fine, I prefer it in my pocket so atleast if I don't hear it ring I will feel it vibrate, well that's the plan anyway. My old jeans actually had a phone shaped mark on the pocket where it was constantly in there whilst wearing them. I'm trying myself to keep it near me but not always in my pockets now, maybe I should get a phone necklace lol.
Well I've covered the parts of the phone I like and use the most hopefully giving readers a good in sight to the phone.
My friend gave me this phone about 6 months ago - he'd bought a smart phone and no longer needed it. What a win...I absolutely love it! And so had my friend - he told me he'd agonised over the decision of upgrading from it because (in his words) 'I love the W995 and I thought it might be my phone for life'.
So what is there to like about the w995?
Firstly, it is extremely easy and intuitive to use. Sony Ericsson are excellent in this department; navigating around the phone's menus and using their predictive texting is very easy to do. Setting alarms, using the calendar and notes section are also a breeze.
Texts can be arranged as a 'conversation' by sender, meaning you can easily scroll back through all the messages to/from a contact.
The phone is a handy size. It's big enough to make allow for a decent screen, for watching back videos and viewing your pictures etc. While also small and light enough to fit in a pocket. The fact that it is a sliding phone means that the screen can be large for the overall size, because the keypad is tucked away until in use.
Weirdly enough, the buttons are actually one of my favourite things about this phone! They are really smooth and give no discomfort for if you end up doing a lot of texting. I don't know how to describe it, they've just got the buttons right!
At 8.1 megapixels, the camera on this phone is far above your average mobile camera, and I've been really pleased with some of the results I've got. It's good to know as well that you can take decent enough videos on your phone should anything eventful occur.
Obviously a big feauture of the phone is the walkman music centre. As I tend to always carry an mp3 player I don't use this as much as I'm sure a lot of people do, but I can vouch that it is easy to use and that the song quality is very good for a mobile phone.
Overall, I have not been at all disappointed with this phone.
walkman products are known for their high quality music, and they aren't kidding! the music on this phone is A-M-A-Z-I-N-G!!! it's better than any other phone i have ever had. i loved this phone and the only reason i bought my new blackberry was because i felt the odd one out not having one haha :) my dad now uses my phone (this one) and its still working perfectly! my dad isn't very good at all with technical stuff, but this phone he can work just like that, it's so easy to use! this phone is not touch screen, which i think is why my dad loves it so much because the buttons are so easy to use. The only thing i would say is the picture quality isn't that great, but it's better than a lot of other phones, plus if you buy a walkman phone, you are normally buying it for the music. Another thing is the head phones aren't very good (the ones which come with the phone) because they break very easy, but just use any other headphones and you won't have no problem. :) You can buy some mini walkman speakers for it, which plug into the plug where you charge the phone, which are good quality. over all a great phone definitely worth buying!
This phone is a gift from my cousins, the price is around £ 205 back then in 2010. One of music phone equipped with a decent camera capabilities, especially in the performance and quality. I'm just happy with the resulting picture is very good quality, the optimal autofocus, face recognition mode. The drawback may be on the camera lens is open with no lid or a specific mechanism to protect it from dust and heavy impact.
A solid slider phone with a selection of metal material and the user's point that not too many with a sliding mechanism that brought still good even though sometimes seem a bit heavy.
Unfortunately, this phone is not too generous on the side of the screen. Sony Ericsson W995 is still using the same type of screen with classical depth (262,144 colors). This is likely to be chosen as a standard requirement that software running on this phone. W995 keypad also does not pose significant problems even though I have big fingers.
For music lovers like me, the W995 provides a two-cone speakers are stereo and a 3.5 mm audio port right on top of the phone. I think the quality of music and sound as well as the headset is pretty good innate.
Several times i found that the system becomes slow. Either when browsing the menu or when typing sms. Will be even more severe when the accelerometer is active and the screen changes orientation in the new conditions. But this gradually improved if we use it long enough, so long as the screen under conditions never die.
Personally i think that this is the best phone i have ever used, i do not usually go for the expensive phones, when i say expensive i mean more than £50+ but when i bought this mobile phone just under 2yrs ago it was the best phone i have ever bought. Not only is the camera really good but the style, the internet usage all the other great features. There was one slight problem with the phone at ne point, it was if you were to put loads of apps on the phone it would go a bit slow, but it didn't bother me much. The phone sells for around £60 now a days and for the price i think thats pretty decent. Ebay would be the best to get it off, you could get it for cheaper. This phone is awesome! I love it i have had it for ages now and it still works great, i cant say theres anything seriously bad about it! :)
I had the white and gold version of this phone, which was very chavvy! I didn't choose it, Orange sent it me without bothering to ask me which colour I wanted (I wanted the red version!!!).
The phone isn't touchscreen, it's simply buttons that you operate with your fingers. I found this much better to use as the buttons responded well to my fingers and I never lost any of the buttons, which was a bonus as they usually fall out when I batter them!
I found it easy to transfer music onto this phone. I downloaded the software from the Sony Ericsson website and did it that way. The sound quality of the phone is excellent and crystal clear, it's just like listening to the Apple iPod. Playing music is simple and you can simply scroll through to find a song that you wish to play. You can turn up the volume to a good level without deafening yourself. I wasn't at all impressed with the headphones that came with the phone as they broke within a week. However, you can use ordinary headphones with the phone, just plug the jack into the socket located on the side of the phone. Simple! The phone also has a radio that is easy to use and is also useful to have.
The phone has many great features and is easy to use. Despite my awful colour the phone itself looks pretty sleek and elegant. You slide it up to reveal the keyboard and slide it down again when you're not using it. It slides easily and without any problems.
A great phone for music lovers.
Let me start by saying that I love Walkman phones. Nothing beats the black color with Orange trims and, this phone goes straight on top of my Walkman phones list. Larger screen, GPS, Wi-Fi and a great user interface makes this phone even more sweeter. A gorgeous 8 megapixels camera, latest Walkman player, 3.5 mm jack and, a kickstand are present on board too. The phones looks good, feels compact and is lightweight. Screen is bright because, it's based on the AMOLED technology, the backlight on the keys looks gorgeous in the dark. The LED flash does it job and, the kickstand on the back isn't very reliable. Audio quality is pretty solid and, the new Walkman player looks awesome and supports themes. In conclusion, the phone has pretty good audio capabilities combined with a top camera. There are a few things here and there that could've been better though.
Love to take photo's? listen to music? and have stacks of storage in your phone? Then this is the product for you.
I am a young 18 year old girl who has purchased this phone twice in my past years and acknowledge that many may say that, young teenagers don't look for nothing but fashion in phones ever since the blackberries came about, Well, i can't exactly say its not true, however, i can just inform you my beliefs of this phone being one of many phones largest rivals due to its amazing quality. Its 8 megapixel camera allows long lasting pictures to keep memories within your hearts, why? well, simply due to its high quality performance with a simple click of its camera button and not forgetting the ''up-market'' videos it allows you to produce too! Includes many great and entertaining facets such as the editing of photos, and an already built in free of charge application named the ''video DJ'' which lets you create lovely videos using either pictures or videos.
This amazing mobile phone also includes an internet web browser with the ability to visit your most desired websites, including watching videos online such as youtube and bbc Iplayer for example. In addition to this, it contains the ability to listen clearly to music which could be downloaded straight from the internet using the USB provided with the purchase of this phone, check the latest weather, keep up to date with friends and family through sites such as twitter and facebook with notifications coming directly to your phone and many more.
The equipment that comes alongside the purchase of this phone includes headphones, a USB charger and data storage device, a video guide CD informing you how to use the phone and its utilities, and a veichle charger aswell as ''loudspeaker'' headphones. Yet, the disadvantages of this phone is that you may need to purchase a seperate memory card in order for you to store huge amounts of memory on your phone which usually costs about £8-10 for an 8GB memory card. In addition to this, i was completely devastated when i had heard that this phone is no longer available to us consumers within the industry yet could be purchased online from websites such as ebay, gumtree and so on including brand new ones.
The Sony Ericsson W995 Walkman was the handset I had before my recent upgrade and I miss it so much! I got this handset in the amazing red colour and it looked amazing! I was so pleased with it.
I had this handset for two years and didn't get bored of it and often got comments on how nice the colour was etc.
I had never used a Sony Ericsson phone before, however this is a really easy phone to use and didn't take me long to figure everything out. Even though it is simple don't think that this means it offers less though! I was able to go online, download apps. (There are less of these available than for the newer smart phones but they are available all the same!). I played games, checked Facebook- everything I needed or wanted to do was available to me!
The camera on this phone is excellent- much better than most of the smart phones out now! I took hundreds of photos and videos. Another great feature I found was the light on the back of the phone- (the same place as the flash- again something many phones now don't have!). It's amazing how often I used the torch to find things or see things clearly- it was a great gadget to have on a phone!
The only down side to this phone is that it is quite bulky and heavy in comparison to other models! I've heard others say that the battery was not good- however I never had a problem at all with battery on the whole 2 years I had it!
Overall a great, good looking phone that is easy to use yet offers everything you could possibly want from a phone. I would definitely recommend this handset!
The W995 Walkman is a simple phone that is much easier to use than a smartphone like a BlackBerry or iPhone. I borrowed mine from a family member for a few months before I bought a new phone and it was instantly familiar as I'm sure most people first used a phone that had a 12 key keypad on the front rather than a touchscreen or keyboard. The navigation menus are nice and simple and Sony have really well organised this. The phone is really compact and feels nice in the hand.
One of the highlights of this phone is the 8 megapixel camera round the back. This has a small flash and while it isn't as good as the Xenon flash on the Cybershot phones, it does a really good job as long as what you are photographing isn't too far away. The camera takes nice, detailed images, although the colours do look a bit off compared to a dedicated digital camera.
As a Walkman phone the W995 has a really good music player. I had an 8GB media card for mine which fits plenty of music on, but annoyingly Sony decided to use their own proprietary memory card rather than a standard format like microSD. The Media Go software is really easy to use if you rip your own CDs to your computer's hard drive, you can then easily transfer your music to the W995. The phone also has a 3.5mm headphone jack so I could use my own Skullcandy headphones not the cheap proprietary ones that come with it.
Texting is easy and you have the choice to turn predictive text on or off. You can set up shortcuts with the directional pad at the front to open up your address book at the home page and this was great as I could easily get to my contacts to make a call or send a text. You can start dialling a number from here too and it was fairly easy to set up speed dialling so I could have important contacts set to a single number.
The web browser isn't great though, if you are going to be making constant use of the internet you are better off looking into a BlackBerry or other smartphone. The alphanumeric keypad really isn't suited to typing web addresses and the small screen can't show much of a page at a time.
ugraded previously to this phone. had the bright red version which looks great. found it very easy to use and personalise. only problem i found with this phone was i had to get it replaced twice during my 2 year contract as it kept freezing up which became very frustrating. the third handset i had was brill though.
has a very good camera on it and very easy to use and video is fairly clear. ability to enlarge, edit and zoom in on pictures after taking them.
video calling which can be expensive but great if you working away from home
facebook easy to use but may need to keep logging in as sometimes logs you out
email easy to use once set up but if doesnt automatically set up can be frustrating trying to do it manually
the music features are simple and work brilliantly, can even shake the phone while hilding the side button to flick through your songs list.
with a memory card the strorage is superb plus makes it very easy to save pictures and music to and from your laptop (if it has card reader facility or use an adaptor usb stick if not) to avoid having to connect using wires.
good variety of games available for this phone
good battery life
internet can be a bit slow
contacts can be allocated with picture and ringtone to make quick identification possible. very useful if its in your bag and you want to know who is calling before you dig around and find it.
gps with orange maps is good but be aware if you rely on it solely it can cut out when it loses signal which in my experience is just at the point you need it most. i found it best to look up the route and keep a written note just in case it cuts off as you near your destination
these are the main features other than texting and calls.
screen display not too big or too small.
overall a very good little phone. small and light weight without being too small to see clearly. only changed phones as bought a smart phone when my contract was ready to upgrade but this is by far the best phone ive had that is not a smart phone.
The Sony Ericsson w995 is an absolute genius, I think that this is one of the best phones in terms of sound quality and it is very easy to use although I now use an iphone. In fact the only reason I cannot give this phone a 5/5 is due to the poor experience I had with the phone due to it freezing and eventually not working in one year, but it was probably my lack of keeping the phone safe. The phone is unbelievably easy to function and to transfer music onto and it also has the perfect screen size, being not too big nor to small. The thing I like the most about this phone is the cost, iphones and most other touchscreens cost an arm and a leg whereas this phone is great at a fraction of the cost. I would recommend this phone to a friend but would also recommend that they took better care of it then I did! The camera is incredible with 8.1 megapixels and flash, this takes truly stunning pictures. Basic features such as calling and texting are made much simpler as there are big(not too big) buttons on the keyboard to do this. There is of course a Walkman button on there as a shortcut to play music. The headphones that come with it complement the phones sound quality well, no other music phone can beat this. It also comes with 8GB micro SD card to store all of your music, videos and games. To keep your phone safe there is also password protection available. With the Sony app store on this you can download a variety of games and applications that will bring out the brilliant features of this phone. The battery life on this phone is huge, it can last 3 days with moderate use making very convenient.
This phone does everything you need a phone to do plus more. I owned this phone for 1 year while i had a contract before getting an upgrade and selling it. The camera on this is better than my digital camera, the walkman is great, its easy to get games and themes for and its been a pretty solid phone. If you get one of these keep the software up to date though because if you dont it can lead to a few annoying problems like it turning itself off and on, the screen can go blan until you update the software or it can just run really slow. This phone has bbc iplayer built in and a great feature on the back is a little pull out stand so you can put the phone down and watch the iplayer or your own videos on it, or you can get a cheap speaker dock if you didnt get one with the phone. This phones quite easy to handle and easy to text from, you can get music from the press of a button and same with the camera. When you buy this phone check your networks coverage, if you cant get 3g you may wish to look for a network that offers you 3g so you can make good use of the phones features like iplayer, video calling and speedy downloads but if you just like to call text and browse 2g will be fine. Battery life is ok, id get a day out of it with my useage, which is quite high so a lower user would get a few days from it.amera, the walkman is great, its easy to get games and themes for and its been a pretty solid phone. I got this phone on contract over a year ago now, and for me - it is perfect! It has an 8 mega pixel camera, which is something that is important for me, to be able to carry around something that can take pictures on the go! The walkman is very good and mine came with an SD card which means I can have plenty of music on my phone, I think I have about 500 songs on it at the moment and it's not even half full!
I'm someone with quite big fingers so I like things with big buttons, the buttons on this phone aren't massive but they are definitely adequate. The texting system is similar to the iPhones, you can see a list of conversations and it can go back months and months - although it's not as easy to scroll through as on an iPhone.
The major problem I have had strangely with this phone, is that when making a long-ish phone call the rate at which the battery drains - I can listen to music for hours, but not generally stay on the phone for more than two!
Other than that, it's a great phone!
While this phone may appear a little out-dated now, compared to the current string of Smartphones that are being released, the Sony Ericsson W995 is still an extremely good phone, and does its job very well.
While it may not come with a huge variety of apps, the phone still shines in many other ways. The first of which is the camera. The camera on the W995 is 8MP, giving it a camera that is better that a lot of the new phones currently on sale. The on phone effects are few, but do their job, allowing you to use effects such as black and white and sepia.
Another great part of the phone is its music player. The sound quality of the phone is top notch, and the menu is easy to use. The buttons on the side of the phone also allow for people to easily play, pause and switch tracks without ever having to unlock their phone, or in some cases even take it out of their pocket.
The battery life of the phone is brilliant. Even with constant texting, music and internet use, I have found that the phone's battery will still manage to last almost two days. But on top of that charging the battery is also extremely quick, as I have found that it will often take less than an hour to charge the phone from around 20% all the way to full battery.
The internet on the phone is very basic, but can still be used quite well. While its difficult the navigate around some web pages, things such as Facebook still work perfectly fine, meaning that this phone is still good for people who are obsessed with constantly checking Facebook.
The apps on the phone are nothing special, with the most useful one I found being the 'Walkmate' which turns the phone into a pedometer, allowing you to see how many steps you have taken a day. There is a store to buy apps and games, though I found it slightly hard to navigate, and none of them really appealed to me.
Overall the phone is extremely good. While it doesn't really compare to new generation Smartphones, it is an extremely good phone to have lying around as a backup, as the long battery life, camera and music player make it an extremely useful phone.
